“Don’t Forget the Pictures: Glass Slides from the
Collection”
On view now through Oct. 20
Going to the movies used to be very different.
Newsreels used to show before the feature film,
theaters looked like palaces, and little glass slides
were projected onto the big screen to advertise local
businesses, instruct audiences how to behave and
to promote upcoming films. Those glass slides, once
called “lantern” slides, are now on display at the
Museum of the Moving Image. Each slide, no larger
than an iPhone, was once projected onto the screen,
before theaters stopped using them in the 1950s.

“Julie Becker: I must create a Master Piece to pay
the Rent”
On view through Sept. 2
Devoted to the work of Julie Becker, “I must create
a Master Piece to pay the Rent,” highlights the late
Los Angeles-based artist’s creations, which embellish
and skewer the ideal of the 20th-century American
dream. Becker drew inspiration from a wide variety
of work including “The Shining,” the children’s book
“Eloise” and stoner lore about the connection between
“The Wizard of Oz” and Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the
Moon.”

Gabriel Orozco: Rotating Objects
Created from wooden planks, Gabriel Orozco’s Roto
Shaku and Obi Scrolls are covered in a colorful variety
of tape. The tapings turn the structures into abstract
objects, filled with signs, symbols and complex
patterns. Created in Tokyo in 2015, Orozco’s Rotating
Objects is a contemporary parallel to the work of
Isamu Noguchi, the museum’s designer, creator and
namesake.
