In this July issue we are happy to once again have another profile story from our dear friend and LIC Courier writer Alan Capper. He sat down with LIC dog walker Ryan Edward Stewart, whose talents put him close to being the new Dog Whisperer. It is great to have Alan back filling our pages with amazing stories and we still wish him a speedy recovery! For our front cover this month we sat down with Gregg Cannizzaro, CEO of Go Indie TV, a streaming entertainment channel with the mission to bring the world of underground independent film and television to an international front. He talks to us about growing up in Long Island City, his upcoming partnership with this year’s World Supermodel Pageant in Fiji, and never forgetting about the western Queens neighborhood he still calls home. In this issue we were happy to cover Mayor Bill de Blasio signing a package of Vision Zero bills. We commend the mayor and hope these bills will help decrease traffic fatalities and allow resident to safely walk on our neighborhood streets. This month we also welcomed The POP BAR to Astoria, a brand new establishment looking to bring the fun of pop culture with movies, music, cold drinks and “Pacific surf inspired” food. The bar features art pieces from 5Pointz artists, including a colorful outdoor piece designed by aerosol artist Shiro that welcomes visitors coming into the bar. So grab some friends and check out this new spot! We also spoke with a duo of Queens students who graduated from an LIC watchmakers program, an actress born in Woodside who celebrated the third season of her TBS show, and an Astoria crafts group who brings together members from all over the borough with the love for knitting, crocheting and more. This issue you will also find breathtaking renderings for upcoming retail space on the LIC waterfront and a 50-story tower coming into the neighborhood, becoming one of the tallest buildings in the borough. As the long summery days continue, don’t forget to check out the LIC Flea & Food, located Saturdays at the outdoor lot at Fifth Street and 46th Avenue, and the Astoria Flea & Food at Kaufman Astoria Studios on Sundays. The Astoria Flea, initially set to run for eight weeks in May, will now be running until the end of August. Make sure to make both those popular western Queens flea markets your next weekend destination. We encourage you to go out and explore Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside and share your findings with us. Don’t forget to send us your ideas and feedback as well. Continue to have a great summer and we will see you in August!
