SUMMER FUN As the weather warms up, opportunities to explore the outdoors keep popping up and this issue has plenty of suggestions for western Queens residents. We highlight a Long Island City fitness trainer who decided to open an outdoor gym class along the East River waterfront. For those who want to get a workout but don’t want to join a gym, this class is taught by professional trainers who also provide equipment to get the best morning or afternoon workout. If you’re interested in learning about the haunted past of Astoria, Boroughs of the Dead offers a walking tour once a month that explores the sometimes grim history of the neighborhood. This two hour tour will take you through old landmarks that have been visited by ghosts. Fresh produce will become more readily available when an urban farm stand comes to Astoria’s Ditmars Park. Fruits and vegetables will be sold by neighborhood youth who will also provide cooking classes. Rockaway Beach may seem like a far trip for some but outdoor trip companies are making it easier to soak up the sun. Several companies are now operating buses from Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside to the beaches and upcoming shops in the Rockaway area. Some companies are even offering drinks, radios and other perks for using their services. You can also read about the annual Warm Up series hosted by MoMA PS1, which provides performances from the newest and most established artists playing electronic and experimental music. We’ve also highlighted a Long Island City resident with an inspiring story. After struggling with homelessness, he is now the founder of a successful real estate firm in the area. As always, the magazine is filled with the latest information on events in the area. Feel free to send any tips to amatua@ qns.com } lic LONG ISLAND CITY COURIER
