“The Sculptor and the Ashtray”
On view through Aug. 23, 2020
The ashtray is an object that is at the center of a
social ritual as the radio and the barbeque are. “The
Sculpture and the Ashtray” was inspired by a 1944
article that chronicled Noguchi’s efforts to design the
perfect ashtray. This exhibition has patent applications
of Noguchi’s second concept of the ashtray, a modular
design for industrial manufacture. It also has letters
between him and a friend, prototypes two mockup
layouts among other pieces to view that relate to this
work.
