Projected images from glass slides were an integral
feature of the early cinema experience. These colorful
3¼-by-4-inch slides were used to illustrate popular
songs during audience sing-alongs, advertise local
businesses, instruct audiences about appropriate
behavior, and promote upcoming lms. Often referred
to as “lantern” slides because of their origin in
pre-cinema magic lantern shows, glass slides served a
practical purpose in the rst movie theaters, allowing
the projectionist to keep the audience entertained as
they changed reels.
In Practice: Other Objects
Natalie Ball, Takming Chuang, Niloufar Emami-far,
LaMont Hamilton, Ariel René Jackson,
Katherine Simóne Reynolds, Aliza Shvarts, Rosa
Sijben and David Bernstein, Sara Stern,
Kenneth Tam, and Kiyan Williams.
The inaugural Black Women’s Film Conference will convene Black
women from all over the country to screen work, exchange lmmaking
strategies, and build community. Oering a space that centers Black
women’s voices and experiences, this conference provides a vital
alternative to a white, male-dominated lm industry. Featuring
screenings, talkbacks, and roundtables in a mix of intimate and
communal spaces, the conference explores the current landscape of
Black women’s cinema and the intersections of history, lm theory,
lmmaking, and political action.
