In this month’s issue, we profile a father and daughter duo in Long Island City who have been painting masterpieces for years. Carlos and Aliyah Seidler have more than 1,000 paintings stacked up in their home and work together to paint and than draw scenes depicting interactions between families, friends and “matchstick people.” Carlos Seidler also works on his own pieces, which are intricate and often focus on faces made of detailed “stains.” Unico Global Tacos is a new restaurant in Long Island City that offers tacos with a twist. Chef Suvir Saran uses fillings with ingredients popular around the world. There are tacos inspired by food in India, South Korea, Mexico, Peru and England. In Astoria, actor Gerard Cordero has jumped back into the industry after working in general contracting for years. Cordero has had roles in television shows like “Gotham,” “Person of Interest” and “Luke Cage.” We also spoke to a Queens resident who has started a borough chapter of Indivisible, a nonprofit that teaches people how to hold their congress representatives accountable during the Trump administration. About 150 people are working together to call and email their representatives to demand that certain policies be passed. Indivisible was started by former Congressional aides and now, there are at least two Indivisible groups in every Congressional district in America. If you’re looking for a new restaurant, bar or gym class to take in Astoria, Christy Arbot has created an app to make it easy and cheap to do so. The Astoria resident created “The Neighborhood,” an app that provides 8 perks for $20 a month so businesses can reach more people and residents can explore undiscovered places in the area. You’ll also find a list of art exhibitions, movies and events and the latest in real estate. If you have a story or tip you’d like to share, reach out to amatua@qns.com.
