Though this has been an unusually warm winter, it’s nice to see the sun out for longer. As always, this month’s issue is packed with new developments in Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside. So many great restaurants have been popping up in your neighborhoods. In this issue, you’ll read more about a Ramen restaurant that is doing things differently. Shuya Café de Ramen in Astoria is serving up ramen with the less traditional chicken and fish broth, along with side dishes that are easy on your wallet and waist. Sugarcube Dessert & Coffee, a new bakery in Long Island City, is pairing geometry and dessert to serve up interesting sweets. Owner Peter Zaharatos is using his background in architecture to create 3D molds for the chocolate he serves. The city is planning to further transform the Long Island City waterfront with a project along 44th Drive that will add a new school and up to 1,000 new apartments. The real estate section also shows a sneak peek at new developments in the area and good news for the iconic Pepsi- Cola sign in Long Island City – it’s on its way toward becoming an official landmark. Though Long Island City’s landscape is transforming, local residents are trying to preserve the past. The historic Elks Lodge is slated for demolition. Residents are trying to landmark the building and recently held a rally to denounce the developer’s decision to remove the building’s facade. The Queens World Film Festival starts next week and we have a sneak peek at a short film made by Sunnyside filmmakers. The duo shot most of their film throughout Sunnyside and Long Island City and used comedy club The Creek and the Cave to tell the story of Mel, a Queens comedian who is in the beginning stages of her comedy career. As always, if you have any interesting stories that you think should be featured in LIC Courier feel free to email tips to amatua@qns.com.
