■ORESTES' LIC Winter Editor’s note: Orestes Gonzalez is an architect, photographer, writer and resident of LIC since 1989. He has been taking photographs for over 25 years, traveling to over 40 countries and documenting what has become the overriding theme in his photography -- man’s intrinsic need for leaving a mark and the different paths to achieving it. His column, “Orestes’ LIC”, will concentrate on showing snippets of life around the areas we live in. A local record keeper, if you will. Take a look at Orestes’ Haunting video of Black & White photographs taken the night after hurricane Sandy ripped through Manhattan Vimeo.com/78436106 Scene 12 march 2015 i LIC COURIER i www.queenscourier.com at Calvary Woodside, Queens, 2015 “Calvary Cemetery is the nation’s largest cemetery. With over 6 million souls interred there, some dating back to the 1600s, this place sits in the middle of a very urban and active area of industrial buildings and busy streets (off the LIE and Greenpoint Avenue). In some areas, the views of the Manhattan skyline are magnificent. It is one of those hidden gems that can be found in our Queens neighborhood. I went there after one of our many snowfalls, and it was an oasis for quiet meditation. The white snow reflecting the overcast light created a very beautiful and almost mystical setting.”
