Marcelle is known for her installations, performances, and videos, which stage forms of labor to produce poetic situations. Occupying MoMA PS1's Duplex gallery, the installation will insert chalk, a pedagogical material to which she has returned throughout her career, in the building’s formerly scholastic space. Numerous rods of chalk will be lodged into the fissures and openings of the gallery’s brick walls from floor to ceiling, revealing the material’s inherent instability and fragility. Martin Scorsese is the iconic American film director. His wide-ranging body of work is at once distinctly personal and rooted in a profound understanding of the art and history of cinema. He is also a consummate New Yorker, and his movies capture the intensity and energy of his home city. Martin Scorsese, the first major exhibition about the director’s deeply intertwined career and life, explores Scorsese’s remarkable half-century of filmmaking within the context of his personal history and his love of cinema. Drawing extensively from Scorsese’s own collection, the exhibition includes production material from his key films, objects from his childhood, behind-the-scenes images, and large-scale projections of scenes from his work. It is organized thematically: Family, Brothers, Men and Women, Lonely Heroes, New York, Cinephile, Cinematography, Editing, and Music. February 19, 2017, marks the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, the notorious wartime directive that authorized the internment of Japanese citizens and American citizens of Japanese heritage living in the Western United States. This exhibition explores Noguchi’s extraordinary decision—despite being exempt from internment as a resident of New York—to enter the Poston War Relocation Center, in the Arizona desert, hoping to contribute something positive to this forcibly displaced community, to which he had never felt more connected. In Noguchi’s words, “Thus I willfully became part of humanity uprooted.”
