Mixing It Up BY SASHA POGREBINSKY The Russians Did It: Part 1 We have to find humor in our daily lives, and with a great cocktail in hand, a very interesting conversation SASHA POGREBINSKY www.qns.com i LIC COURIER i January 2017 27 can begin. Taking current events into account, why not celebrate the latest scandals with a fun drink, a great conversation piece to get the party going? Some of the most popular Russian inspired drinks we all have come to know and love are the Moscow Mule, the less known but equally fascinating Ninitchka, the Katinka, the dark and stormy Black Russian and the playful Volga Boatman. Let’s explore the great Volga River with a cheerful classic cocktail: The Volga Boatman. Named for Europe’s longest river, which stretches for 2,300 miles from the Valdai mountains into the Caspian Sea. Rumor has it that the drink was invented by a skipper who used it to bribe the local port authorities in order to smuggle some very highly prized trout and caviar. It’s both sweet and sour, unexpectedly soothing, yet dangerously strong. It’s playful color is deceivingly innocent, leading to easy consumption; you’ve been warned! Look for Part 2 next month for more Russian-themed cocktails and anecdotes. Nazdorovye! The Volga Boatman 4 oz vodka 2 oz Kirsch ( a clear sourcherry liqueur) 1 oz Tangerine Juice (juice of 1 tangerine) Sliced Tangerines for Garnish ½ oz sour cherry juice Combine all ingredients, shake well with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with sliced tangerines and a drop of sour cherry juice.
