from the editor HAPPY 2013! Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is ready to start a brand new year. Instead of going with the typical “quit smoking” or “eat healthier” resolutions for the New Year, my fiancé and I decided we’re going to do a different activity every day, whether that means watching a movie we haven’t seen before or walking through a new part of the neighbor- hood. I’m excited to see how long we can keep it up. Thank God for Netflix and comfortable shoes. In line with the New Year, this issue features a few people who are do- ing things a little differently. We interviewed an Astoria musician whose impetus into a life on stage isn’t for the fortune and the fame but for the love of the music. In a city where everyone is trying to make it big, he continues to be himself. We also interviewed a young artist whose abstract paintings, inspired by the biological elements of the world, are taking off. She said she pre- fers working in a collective space rather than on her own, adding to the communal atmosphere that makes the LIC arts community so unique. Even our fashion spread is a collage of brightly colored and shimmery pieces to spice up a winter wardrobe against a sea of neutrals. Since our neighborhood is all about being distinctive, we figured, why shouldn’t we be? Stay you, LIC. Photo by Orestes Gonzalez Alexa Altman We’re waiting to hear from you!
