The Upside

A comedic look at the
relationship between a
wealthy man with quadriplegia
and an unemployed
man with a criminal record
who’s hired to help him.
Based on the hit French
film, “Les Intouchables,”
the plot follows Phillip
(Ryan Cranston) as a disabled
white billionaire,
who feels that life is not
worth living. To help him
in his day to day routine,
he hires Del (Kevin Hart), an African American
parolee, trying to reconnect with his estranged
wife. What begins as a professional relationship
develops into a friendship as Del shows his
grouchy charge that life is worth living. imdb.
com Rated PG-13
Director: Neil Burger
Writers: Jon Hartmere, Éric Toledano
Cast: Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston, Nicole
Kidman
“Cranston colors the grieving Phillip with
more depth than the script ultimately sheds for
him, as well as a comic slyness to make Phillip’s
bond with Dell believable, and the role of Dell
gives Hart a solid opportunity to inch closer to
handling more dramatic duties, while still playing
well within his comedic wheelhouse.” ~ Jeremy
Kibler, The Artful Critic

The Farewell
Friday, November 22, 7:30pm
A headstrong Chinese-
American woman, Billi
(played by Awkwafina,
best known for “Crazy
Rich Asians”), returns to
China when her beloved
grandmother is diagnosed
with a terminal illness and
has only a short while to
live. The family decides to
keep the grandmother in
the dark about her prognosis.
Billi struggles with her
family’s decision as they
all stage an impromptu wedding as the ruse for
them to see grandma one last time. Rated PG
Director: Lulu Wang
Writer: Lulu Wang
Cast: Shuzhen Zhao, Awkwafina, X Mayo
“Wang has written a deeply personal film that
claims to be “Based on an Actual Lie,” and she’s
found precisely the right star Awkwafina to
maintain the delicate balance of this story – one
that easily could have become sentimental and
manipulative but resonates with truth from first
scene to last. This is a genuine, heartfelt acting
turn that proves that Awkwafina has a range that
even her most diehard fans may not have suspected.
She never once feels mannered or forced, completely
disappearing into her likable, heartbreaking
character.” ~ Brian Tallerico, rogerebert.com

“This is an enchanting movie, filled with
humor, pathos, charm, and gentle wisdom.
A great choice for viewers of all ages…
Toy Story 4 rides high on a tide of laughter,
buoyed up by comic action sequences, plenty
of funny dialogue, and the usual collection of
oddball characters… Best of all, the strong
positive messages and wonderful comic scenes
come with little negative content…” ~ Kirsten
