OUT & ABOUT
BY JILL DAVIS
Halloween falls on a Sunday this year which gives
the kids more time to show off their costumes (and
collect more candy). Speaking of candy, did you
know that 9 out of 10 parents confess to taking a treat
from the kids’ trick-or-treat hauls? So kids, keep an
eye on that goodie bag!
October brings a mix of indoor and outdoor events.
The weather can be weird but hopefully there’s something
fun for you to explore. Please note that Covid
rules continue to change and vary by municipality
and venue, so check the websites before you go.
Have spooky good fun!
ROGERS &
HAMMERSTEIN’S
“SOUTH
PACIFIC”
Now through
October 24
Plaza Theatre
700 Hempstead
Turnpike, Elmont
516-599-6870
plazabroadwaylongisland.
com
Ready to go to the
theater? The Plaza
in Elmont bills itself
as “Nassau County’s only professional Equity
theatre.” It even has a full orchestra, so this
is some serious musical business. Shows are
only Thursdays through Sundays and at various
times, so call or check out the website for particulars.
Tickets start at $49 and there’s free onsite
parking. That’s a lot less expensive and more
convenient than going to Broadway!
MICHAEL BUBLÉ IN CONCERT
Friday, October 15, 8 pm
Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale
livenation.com
Fans of Michael Bublé have been waiting a long
time for this concert—it’s been rescheduled four
times since the pandemic began. Michael says
his “goal is to leave fans feeling good,” and
he seems to want to make sure of that…proof
of vaccine or a negative Covid test is required
for admission (check the website for details).
Tickets start at $69.60.
COLLEGE POINT
STREET FAIR
Sunday, October 17, 11
am – 6 pm
College Point Blvd. bet.
14th and 20th Aves.
The operative word
for this event is “free!”
Sponsored by the College
Point Board of Trade, this
is the only street fair in Queens that provides children with
free rides all day long. There’ll also be lots of food, shopping
and games for kids and their grown-ups. Note this is scheduled

to happen rain or shine. Let’s hope for shine.
20TH ANNUAL TOTTEN TROT 5K FOOT RACE &
KIDS FUN RUN
Sunday, October 31, 7:30am Registration
Bayside Historical Society, Bayside
baysidehistorical.org
This event is always scheduled on the Sunday closest to
Halloween and this year, it’s right on the button. The course
is scenic, going along the waterfront through Ft. Totten and
along Little Bay Park to the Throgs Neck Bridge. For kids,
there’s a short distance “Fun Run” at 10am (free!). Kids are
encouraged to wear their Halloween costume and this year’s
Totten Trot 5K will feature a special guest appearance by the
501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison, a worldwide STAR
WARS costuming organization. Note this is a rain-or-shine
event. The entry fee is $30 until October 16.
HALLOWEEN AT QUEENS
COUNTY FARM MUSEUM
Sunday, October 31, 11 am – 5 pm
Queens County Farm, Floral Park
queensfarm.org
This event is pricier than the
Botanical Garden but there’s more
for kids to do. On the other hand,
it doesn’t have the beer and wine
garden like the Botanical Garden
does, so you decide. Activities
include the Amazing Maize Maze,
hayrides and trick-or treating. Oh
and don’t forget the haunted farmhouse,
a live DJ and food vendors.
Advance tickets are recommended
(online only); general admission
is $20/person and free for ages 3
& under.
