Le Havre Blast from the Past, Part 2
BY STEVE YOUNG, VICE PRESIDENT
To continue the story of Le
Havre’s beginnings, I am
adding pictures with this
article which will give
you an idea of what life
was like here years ago.
The pictures show a
girl ice skating on the
frozen tennis courts, a
mother and daughter sunbathing
on the sandy beach by
Pool #2 with a building in the process
of construction, and the Throgs
Neck Bridge being constructed
in 1960. Thanks to the Le Havre
Maintenance Dept. for providing
these great, nostalgic photos.
Back then, Le Havre was
a very hot area; we had
“Ripples on the Water,”
a top night spot at the
time, just down the
block; many apartments
that were occupied by
airline stewardesses;
and lots of young people
on-the-go. Tennis, ice
skating, disco, and a lovely
open beach—life was good. We
even had our own boat house down
by the water, a fourth tennis court,
and a handball court. We also had
a hospital right on the corner of
12th Avenue and 166th Street which
saved my life after I was bitten by a
hornet 45 years ago.
Life was good here, and it has only
gotten better with a great gym, clubhouse,
bistro, three beautiful clay
tennis courts, two pools, and playgrounds.
Just one additional thing:
Bring back the beach!
