The Dining Diva:
PHO Grand
BY HELENE OELERICH
PHO Grand is a new Vietnamese restaurant
located at 38-40 Bell Blvd. in Bayside.
It offers delicious Vietnamese food in an
inviting atmosphere. The ambiance is really
nice and the pillows on the sofas are
comfortable.
Appetizers include shrimp spring rolls,
crispy spring or vegetable rolls. We loved
the summer rolls with peanut dip...yummy!
Other appetizers include calamari, pork
and chive dumplings, fried chicken wings,
seafood pancakes and grilled squid, as well
as specials of the day.
There are many salads and soups. The
broth is light and flavorful! Sandwiches,
angel hair noodle dishes, several seafood
dishes as well as beef, chicken and pork.
The pork chops had a very good Char
flavor, served with cucumber, tomato, fish
sauce on the side. There is Hot & Spicy as
well as Calm and Flavorful. Beverages and
desserts are available too.
PHO Grand is open 7 days a week from
11am until 10pm.Call 646-969-2288 or
visit www.phograndbayside.com. It can
get quite busy and there’s a line sometimes,
but it’s worth it—the food is so good!

“Must-see, breathtaking account of
the 1969 mission to the moon…‘Apollo
11’ re-creates the 1969 moon mission
using newly discovered footage from the
National Archives…This material doesn’t
just consist of alternate angles and a few
quotes from Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong
and Michael Collins, the NASA astronauts
who undertook the mission. This
material is grand, sweeping and breathtakingly
cinematic. Some of it, originally
filmed in 65 mm — the same format used
for big-screen Hollywood epics — has
been seen in cropped versions here and
there, but never in its full glory until
now.” ~ Rafer Guzman, Newsday

In order to get away from
their busy lives, the Wilson
family takes a vacation to Santa
Cruz, California, with the plan
of spending time with their
friends, the Tyler family. On a
day at the beach, their young
son Jason almost wanders off,
causing his mother Adelaide to
become protective of her family.
That night, four mysterious
people break into Adelaide’s
childhood home where they’re staying. The family
is shock to find out that the intruders look like them,
only with grotesque appearances. imdb.com Rated R
Director: Jordan Peele
Writer: Jordan Peele
Cast: Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss
“This delightfully deranged home invasion-family horror film
works because director Jordan Peele not only knows how to
tell his story, he assembled an incredible cast to play two roles….
For the actors, it’s a chance to play two extremes, one of intense
normality and the other of wretched evil. In ‘Us,’ Winston
Duke shows off his comedic strengths and if Nyong’o doesn’t
get some professional recognition for her performances here, I
will be very disappointed. Jordan Peele is his own director,
with a vision that melds comedy, horror and social commentary.
And he has a visual style that’s luminous, playful and delightfully
unnerving.” ~ Monica Castillo, rogerebert.com

utopia, but Toothless’ discovery
of an untamed, elusive
mate draws the Night Fury
away. When danger mounts
at home and Hiccup’s reign
as village chief is tested, both
dragon and rider must make
impossible decisions to save
their kind. imdb.com Animated; Rated PG
Director: Dean DeBlois
Writers: Dean DeBlois, Cressida Cowell
Cast voices of: Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, F.
Murray Abraham
“’How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden Kingdom’ is a
highly entertaining film, with a good mixture of action and
humor. But it’s worth watching for more than just amusement
– it has numerous positive messages that parents will want
their kids to absorb. As Hiccup matures as chief and as a man,
Hiccup learns about loyalty, friendship, sacrifice, courage
and love – virtues that are too often hidden in movies. But
thankfully, they are clearly visible in this enjoyable family
film.” ~ Kristen Hawkes, parentpreviews.com
