N E W S MAY 8 L E H A V R E Landscaping Reminders LeHavre Art League is Alive and Well 8 LEHAVRE COURIER | MAY 2013 | WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM I was recently at our Landscaping Meeting and several issues were discussed. One that was extensively discussed was the spring plantings of fl owers, along with new replacement shrubs, tree pruning, and general lawn care. It was noted by dog owners at the meeting that many LeHavre residents allow their dogs to urinate on the fl owers and greenery, causing browning and even death to our plants. When dog walkers are questioned as to why they don’t curb the dogs, they say things like “it’s only watering the plants “ or “it’s good for the plants.” Apparently they think urine is the same as water. Urine contains nitrogen, which is poisonous to plants in larger doses. With many dogs allowed to pee on the same spots, the dose becomes lethal and plants die. As a walker in the area, I love watching all the cute dogs we have, but am not happy about some owners’ behavior. We mostly clean up poop after the dogs, but need to be aware of the urine damage. It’s not the dogs but the owners who need to be a bit more community-minded towards our children at play on the grounds and the plants trying to grow here. We pay thousands of dollars a year for new plants at the corners of our property and new bushes as part of our landscaping budget. I for one love the flowers AND the dogs but we need to be a bit more mindful. Please walk Puffy or Sandy to the street and keep them away from the doorway entrances, stair walls at our public entranceways, and off the plants and grass. It will make our spring more lovely with bright and colorful blooms for all. Please visit the Astoria Savings Bank in the Whitestone Shopping Center to view the monthly, changing art exhibits of our own LeHavre artists. There will be paintings and photos. Since December we have had Charles Bentz, Irene Mallon and Rosetta Bentz. Jim Bishoff just fi nished for the month of April and will be followed by four other artists from our group, each appearing for one month. Please support your local artist by dropping by to see the work. It is in the bank’s street window so you don’t have to enter the bank if you don’t wish to. Judy Densky Chair, LeHavre Art League
