Battle of the Sexes
Friday, January 12, 3pm and 7pm
Directors: Jonathan Dayton,
Valerie Faris
Writer: Simon Beaufoy
Cast: Emma Stone, Steve Carell,
Andrea Riseborough
In the wake of the sexual revolution
and the rise of the women’s
movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s
world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and
ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve
Carell) was billed as the “Battle of the Sexes” and
became one of the most watched televised sports events
of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the
world…together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural
spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court,
sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms
that continue to reverberate today. — Fox Searchlight
Pictures Rated PG-13
“The film’s two leads couldn’t be better. Stone absolutely
shines as King, a ferocious athlete and vocal
advocate for gender-equal pay….Carell all but steals
the movie as Riggs, a high-energy gambling addict and
born showman. Just about every aspect of this movie is
pitch-perfect, from Sarah Silverman’s supporting role
as a chain-smoking publicist to Simon Beaufoy’s impeccable
screenplay to Nicholas Britell’s lovely, slightly
loungey score.” ~ Rafer Guzman, Newsday

GYU-KAKU: Japanese BBQ
BY HELENE OELERICH
GYU-KAKU is “Horn of the Bull” in Japanese. It’s also the name
of a chain of “Yakiniko” restaurants, which means that it specializes in
Japanese barbeque.
Our nearest GYU-KAKU is right nearby in downtown Flushing.
This fun restaurant offers a personal grill installed at every table, so
everyone gets a chance at becoming an expert cook! Customers share
premium meats to cook over the flaming charcoal grill, including
Harami skirt steak, Angus Kalbi short ribs and beef tongue, among
many others. There are also delicious seaweed salads, soups, rice and
drinks, such as sake, shochu, frosty cold beers and more.
The staff is amazing. They make sure you are safe cooking on the grill,
explain the menus, and lead guests through the dining experience with
helpful hints about what to order and which sauces to choose for dipping.
It’s a perfect choice for first dates, family gatherings, or catching up with
friends.
You will see specials every day and Happy Hour prices all day except
during the peak hours of 6pm-9pm. It’s open from 11:30am until midnight
