As 2019 comes to an end, we at the Downtown Alliance
are reflecting on all that has happened over this past year.
One of the most exciting
moments here Downtown
was on July 10, when tickertape
poured from windows
to welcome home the U.S.
Women’s National Soccer
Team – champions once again
– after their FIFA World Cup
victory in France. Thousands
lined Broadway on that sunny
summer day, cheering the
soccer heroes as they rode a
float up to City Hall.
Soccer fans and Lower
Manhattanites got to relive this
exciting moment in December,
albeit under greyer skies, when
the Downtown Alliance unveiled
a new plaque on Broadway,
immortalizing that inspiring
parade and giving tribute to the
U.S. Women’s National Team.
All smiles despite the rain, Lloyd applauded as the plaque was unveiled on Broadway.
Carli Lloyd, the team’s cocaptain
and star midfielder,
was there to celebrate
Broadway’s newest marker,
and was joined by New
York City Council Member
Margaret Chin, women.
nyc Executive Director Faye
Penn, three young female
players from the New York
Football Club youth team and
Downtown Alliance President
Jessica Lappin.
Penn and Chin discussed just
how important the team’s push
for equal pay has been for the
women’s equality movement.
And Lloyd, the first player
to ever score a hat trick in
a women’s World Cup final,
noted how poignant the wide
recognition has been for her
and her team.
At the event , L appin
noted that, “They inspired
us not just because of their
magnificent victory on the
world stage, but because they
stood their ground and fought
for equality – on the field and
off – which is an essential
American value.” She later
observed that “their strength
on and off the field, brought
so many of us together during
a year when our country felt,
at times, extremely divided.
We are all grateful for their
poise, skill and principles.”
