Out &
About BY JILL DAVIS
Happy Thanksgiving! This year we celebrate on November
28. That’s later than usual, which is good. It gives us
more time to ruin the meal.
For those who feel challenged on Thanksgiving, we remind
you of the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line (1-800-288-
8372). Butterball has its entire staff of home economists on
duty Thanksgiving Day to handle the 7,000 to 8,000 calls it
expects to receive that day (that’s a lot of helpless cooks!).
And don’t be afraid that your questions will be too dumb.
Here are a couple of new true Talk-Line stories we dug up:
A woman called the Turkey Talk-Line to find out
how long it would take to roast her turkey. To answer
the question, the Talk-Line home economist asked how
much the bird weighed. The woman responded, “I don’t
know, it’s still running around outside.”
A restaurant owner in California wanted to know how
to roast a turkey for a vegetarian menu.
Overheard at the supermarket: A lady was picking
through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store but
couldn’t find one big enough for her family. She asked a
stock boy, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?” The stock
boy replied, “No ma’am, they’re dead.”
And let’s not forget the need for a little humor as we
gather ‘round the table for the feast:
“Most turkeys taste better the day after; my mother’s tasted
better the day before.” ~ Rita Rudner
“I hate turkeys. If you stand in the meat section at the
grocery store long enough, you start to get mad at turkeys.
There’s turkey ham, turkey bologna, turkey pastrami. Someone
needs to tell the turkey, ‘man, just be yourself.’” ~ Mitch
Hedberg
“What we’re really talking about is a wonderful day set
aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one
diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?” ~
Erma Bombeck
