16 OCTOBER OOuutt & About
BY JILL DAVIS
Halloween falls on a Tuesday this year, and the preceding weekend is not only host
to our own Halloween Party & Parade, but also promises lots of activities around
town to get folks into the spooky spirit.
But before the day of ghosts and goblins arrives, this October also has a Friday
the 13th, giving this month a double dose of the disconcerting. (And for all of you
nervous Nellies, the next time an October will have a Friday the 13th won’t be until
2023, so we’re good for a few years.)
For some reason that I do not understand, the number 13 has been viewed as an
unlucky number for centuries. In fact the Code of Hammurah, written in 1700 B.C.,
omitted the #13 in its list of laws, a good indication that even the ancient Babylonians
considered it creepy. By the way, if you live in fear of the number 13, you suffer
from “triskaidekaphobia” (say that three times fast!).

Band” brings back the sound of jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke,
Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and more. Tickets are just $15, so I say to myself,
“What a wonderful world!”

2011 when Bette Midler, a big fan of Darlene’s, inducted
her into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The
Coasters, also Hall of Fame inductees (1987) open the show with their hits “Yakety
Yak”, “Down in Mexico,” “Poison Ivy,” and more. Tickets range from $40 to $48.

The Farm is having a whole weekend
of Halloween-themed activities
that are sure to be fun for the whole
family.
The festivities kick off on Saturday
with the Farm’s Haunted House
(1pm-7pm) and continues on Sunday
(11am-7pm). The Farm has prepped the barn for a haunting, “the perfect way to put
you in the Halloween spirit,” they say. Go on a hayride, down some mulled cider, and
buy some apples so you can practice your pie-baking before Thanksgiving. The Farm
recommends that this event is appropriate for children ages 6-12 (and any adults
with arrested development). Admission is $4 (free for Farm members).
On Sunday, the Farm also hosts its annual
Children’s Fall Festival (11am-4pm),
and they invite everyone to dress in costume.
For the kids there will be bounce
houses, games and pony rides. And don’t
forget to slip on your cowboy boots and
enjoy some live country western music
while you’re at it. There will also be food
vendors around all day. Admission is 20
bucks for kids and grown-ups (free for
Farm members). Bring cash, since there
isn’t an ATM on the premises.

that starts at Ft. Totten,

Park, and hobbles to the finish at
the Throgs Neck Bridge. (Warning:
it’s happening, rain or shine.)
Kids can participate in a “fun run” at 10am (no charge), and there’ll be cash prizes,
awards, raffles and goodie bags. Registration for the 5K costs $30 per person until
10/15, $35 until 10/28, and $40 on race day, so best to sign up early.
Halloween at the Queens Botanical Garden
Sunday, October 29, 12pm-4pm
Queens Botanical Garden
43-50 Main Street, Flushing
queensbotanical.org
718-886-3800
If you’re not into trotting around
town or hopping on a hayride,
how about a visit to the Queens
Botanical Garden? It sounds like
a nice, mellow afternoon where
you can make seasonal botanical crafts, see a magic show, and meet Flora, QBG’s
friendly mascot (note: word is that Flora’s very cool, but that her evil twin, Fauna, is a
nightmare.). The Garden says you should bring your trick-or-treat bags, so I suspect
there’ll be lots of goodies for the kids. Admission is $6 for adults; $4 for ages 62 and
over; $2 for kids 4 to 12; and free for little ones ages 3 and under.
