We Remember Darlene Hsu
By now most of you have heard of the tragic passing of Darlene Hsu,
who was a victim of the catastrophic storm on September 1 while visiting
her boyfriend in Forest Hills. Darlene had been working in the
Cryder Point office for approximately a month, filling in for Bridget
Matus who is on leave.
Although Darlene was at Cryder for only a short time, she made
a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure to meet

her. A hard worker and fast learner, Darlene was probably most
memorable for her upbeat spirit and great sense of humor.
Arrangements and names of Darlene’s family members were not
available at press time, although we know she is survived by her mother.
On behalf of the board, staff and residents of Cryder Point, we extend
our deepest condolences to Darlene’s mother, family and friends at this
devastating time.

COVID VACCINE UPDATE
According to nyc.gov, at press time, the
percentage of adults in NYC who are fully
vaccinated has increased to just over 70% and
77% in Queens.
In August, Mayor de Blasio instituted a
mandate requiring proof of at least one vaccination
for indoor dining as well as theater
and gym attendance. The ruling went into
effect August 16 with businesses required to
begin enforcement on September 13.
Meanwhile, the FDA gave full approval of
the Pfizer vaccine on August 23, and on August
25, Moderna completed its submission
process to the FDA for full approval.
There also has been recent discussion regarding
booster shots. Despite earlier reports
that the Pfizer booster would be available on
September 20, as of now that date is likely
but is not set in stone. Whenever the Pfizer
booster becomes available, the Moderna
booster is expected to follow shortly thereafter.
Notably, experts are currently evaluating
whether the boosters can be “mixed and
matched,” i.e., whether someone who first received
the Pfizer vaccine can take a Moderna
booster or vice versa.
Information continues to change rapidly,
so refer to nyc.gov or cdc.gov for regular updates.
OUR STAFF WEATHERS THE
STORM!
The board has been receiving a lot of
messages of appreciation and praise for Bill
Newell and his staff in their handling of the
horrific storm of September 1.
Eileen Annechino reported,
“So many residents have
shared with me how impressive
Bill and his staff
were responding and
dealing with the unprecedented
amount of rain and
the flooding all over the
property…The early risers
saw firsthand everyone hard
at work before regular shift
hours, noting how lucky we are to
have them.”
She summed it up: “Teamwork and leadership,
plain and simple.” Well said, Eileen,
and on behalf of the board, we couldn’t agree
more.
2021 ANNUAL
SHAREHOLDERS’ MEETING
& ELECTION
For anyone who did not see the posting, a
quorum of 51% was achieved at the annual
shareholders’ meeting on August 19. Yes,
that was a close call, and we hope for a better
turnout in the future. In any case, all four
candidates were officially elected for two-year
terms. We welcome new board member Sharon
Goldsmith and returning members Joel
Haravay, John Naegele and Tom Wise.
