C R Y D E R P O I N T September9 Cryder Point Photo of the Month Runner-up Marsha Gellert was quick on the uptake and captured this lovely rainbow over the bridge right after a recent rainstorm. www.qNS.com | September 2016 | CRYDER POINT Courier 9 How was the winner chosen? By Jill Davis Congratulations to Cheryl Kay, who took this month’s cover shot and is the winner of our very first Photo of the Month! To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I’d receive any pictures, and I actually thought if I got even one it would be great--and it would certainly make choosing the winner easy! But in an embarrassment of riches, three Cryder Point residents submitted fabulous photos. I was very excited…until I realized I had a dilemma. While I have a decent eye, I’m not a professional photographer or graphic artist. I couldn’t decide on just one and besides, who was I to be the judge? These gorgeous photos deserve someone with a little more credibility than I could bring to the table. Not to mention that I live here and I’d feel terrible if I inadvertently offended any of my neighbors…and can you imagine if I chose one photo and lots of people thought I should have picked a different one? Scandal! Discord! Drama! The stress was building and my cute little idea was starting to give me agida. After I dug a Rolaid out of my purse, it hit me: I work for a newspaper, duh! And newspapers have professional artists who look at photographs all day long, hello! These are the people who select photos to be placed in articles, and they use the best pictures to make the words that we writers string together more interesting (and sometimes we need all the help we can get). In other words, they know what they’re doing. So I asked three of the art directors at the Queens Courier, Steve, Cheryl and Jonathan, to choose the winning photo. It should be noted they are all very good artists and they do not work directly for our Cryder Point Courier. So they have two qualities that are important: expertise and objectivity. So now you know the contest was officially judged by experts! A note about Cheryl Kay’s picture: She reports that she took her photo at 5:30am on her way to work one recent morning. Nice shot before a second cup of coffee! Here are the terrific photos from our runners-up, Mary Grace Farruggia and Marsha Gellert. Thank you all! And everyone, please send in your photos! Hey, you gotta be in it to win it! Runner-up Mary Grace Farruggia is also an early-bird--she took this beautiful picture from her balcony at the crack of dawn a couple of weeks ago. Contest rules: The photographer must be a resident of Cryder Point, and all photos must of the property or of a view from the property. They also must be current, that is, taken no more than a couple of months before you submit them--we don’t want to see pictures with the old balconies, for example. Any description of where you were on the property, the day of week or time of day…any details that you can provide which bring your neighbors into the moment of the photo…are eagerly welcomed. Submit your pictures to jdavis@qns.com and yours might be selected to be featured in the paper. Please be sure to put “Cryder Point Photo” in the subject line of your email and include the full name of the photographer and an approximate date of the picture.
