C R Y D E R P O I N T September 14 OOuutt & A Abboouutt Dance Classes: Rumba and Tango! Beginning Saturday, September 10, 4pm and 5:30pm Bayside Jewish Center, 203-05 32nd Avenue, Bayside 718-767-4458 DanceLessonsByLenny.com It’s time to put on your dancing shoes again for a new round of lessons from Cryder Point’s very own Lenny Seasonwein. Rumba lessons start at 4pm with the Tango following at 5:30pm. The classes last for ten weeks, but you pay as you go ($10 per person); there’s no obligation, and beginners are welcome. Partners are rotated upon request, so if you’re going solo, no need to worry…Lenny knows it takes two to tango! Antique Motorcycle Show Sunday, September 18, 2016, 11am-4pm Queens County Farm Museum 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park 718-347-3276 queensfarm.org The museum hosts its 36th Annual Motorcycle Show—that’s a lot of Harleys, Ducatis and Yamahas! This show displays of various makes and models of motorcycles that have been out of production for 10 years or more (gee, if something from that recent is considered an antique, I must be pre-historic). There’s other stuff to do too: Music, farmhouse tours, hayrides, and food, so there’s something for everyone. Admission is free for Farm members and $5 for everyone else. Tony Danza in Concert Sunday, September 18, 3pm Queensborough Performing Arts Center 222-05 56 Avenue, Bayside 718) 631-6311 qcc.cuny.edu/qpac To me he’s still the guy from Taxi, but apparently Tony’s got a cabaret act and has even done a run at the famous Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan. Tony calls his show “Standards & Stories,” and he’s backed by a live band playing a selection of hits from the Great American Songbook. The New York Times said Tony’s “a live wire who tap-dances, plays the ukulele, tells stories and radiates irresistible charm!” Pretty impressive. Tickets range from $40-$50. 14 cryder point courier | September 2016 | WWW.QNS.COM Since September marks the return to school for most kids, it seems appropriate to provide a little educational message this month. Impress friends and family with the following insights: This year the first day of autumn is on Thursday, September 22. How is this date determined, you ask? I’ll tell you anyway. It’s the date of the autumnal equinox, whereby there are exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness at the Equator (or close to it). A little etymology: The word “equinox” comes from the Latin words “equi” meaning “equal” and “nox” meaning “night.” Quite logical! You’ve heard of a Harvest Moon, right? That’s the full moon near the autumnal equinox and was so named because of the bright illumination of the moon that enabled farmers to work late. Don’t you feel smarter? Okay, never mind. Annual Queens County Fair Saturday & Sunday, September 24 & 25, 11am-6pm Queens County Farm Museum 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park 718-347-3276 queensfarm.org What a great way to welcome autumn. This is one of the Farm’s most popular annual events and it’s now in its 34th year. It’s a real oldfashioned county fair right here in Queens complete with competitions in livestock, produce, home crafts, arts & crafts and more. (You can even enter competitions yourself; check out the website for details.) There will also be pie eating and corn husking contests, pig races, hayrides, carnival rides, midway games, and children’s entertainment. There will also be local food and craft vendors on the farm all weekend. Admission is free for members, $10/day for grown-ups and $5/day for kids 12 and under. Rita Moreno in Concert Sunday, September 25, 3pm Queensborough Performing Arts Center 222-05 56 Avenue, Bayside 718-631-6311 qcc.cuny.edu/qpac I know you haven’t asked, but my favorite character in West Side Story is Anita. I think it’s because it was played in the movie by Rita Moreno…too fabulous. She’s in the history books as the first performer to win an Oscar, an Emmy, a Tony, and a Grammy, something that’s been achieved by only 11 other entertainers. And she’s still on the road at 84 years old…you go girl! Tickets are $40 to $50.
