18 JULY OOuutt & A Abboouutt
In addition to Independence Day, here’s a reason to celebrate this month that I think we can all
appreciate: July is Cell Phone Courtesy Month!
And in our never-ending quest to dig a little deeper into special acknowledgments both large
and small, we discovered that Cell Phone Courtesy Month was established in 2002 by Jacqueline
Whitmore of Palm Beach. Jacqueline’s an instructor in social and business etiquette and offers all
sorts of common-sense tips for being more courteous when on our cell phones, such as “turn it
off in a meeting;” “keep your conversations private;” and “avoid cell yell.”
In the ensuing 15 years I think it’s obvious that people haven’t paid much attention to the
effort. It seems that everybody’s always distracted by their phones and just can’t focus on the
moment. I am theorizing that…oh, that’s my cell ringing, gotta go!
Zumba at Little Bay Park
Wednesdays, 6:30pm-7:30pm
Cross Island Pkwy. between Utopia Pkwy. and Totten Ave.
www.nycgovparks.org/parks/littlebaypark
Not to be confused with the rumba, the samba or the
mambo, Zumba’s a cross between aerobics and dance
(in other words, it’s totally exhausting). Free classes
have re-zumed this summer at Little Bay Park, so if
you’re feeling happy and peppy and bursting with verve,
why not put a little zoom-zoom in your life?
Family Cooking by “Allergic to Salad”
Saturday, July 15, 12pm-2pm
Queens Botanical Garden
43-50 Main Street, Flushing
queensbotanical.org
No, “Allergic to Salad” is not the name of
a new alt-rock band. The QBG is offering
classes in farm-to-table cooking, aimed
mostly at kids. So if your child shuns all
things green, it might be worth a try. The
Garden promises that participants will “enjoy
a tasty treat at the end of the session.”
I suspect that what passes as “tasty” is
highly debatable. Tickets for the session
range from $15 to $35.
Beach Boys Tribute Band
Saturday, July 22, 7:30-9:30
Tilles Center for the Performing Arts
720 Northern Blvd., Greenvale
516.299.3100
Tillescenter.org
This concert is billed as “the ultimate tribute, featuring the iconic Beach Boys’ most
popular and greatest hits,” and I’m sure it won’t disappoint. Tickets go for $50 to
$120. TIP: If you’re up for a quick trip to Manhattan, you can catch the real deal at
the Beacon Theatre on August 17. You won’t see Brian Wilson but you will see Mike
Love. Tickets start at $44.50 for the nosebleed seats. At either concert, you’ll have
fun, fun, fun!

Free Movie Screening: Fences
Wednesday, July 26, 2pm-4:15pm
Douglaston/Little Neck Public Library
249-01 Northern Blvd., Little Neck
718-225-8414
queenslibrary.org
Denzel Washington brought August Wilson’s
classic play “Fences” to the big screen in this
award-winning film adaptation. Viola Davis
won an Oscar for her stellar performance as
the wife of a working-class African American
raising his family in the 1950s while coming
to terms with the disappointing events of his
life. Is he bitter? Uh, just a little. Rated PG-13.
50 Summers of Love: Micky Dolenz and Mark Lindsay
Friday, July 28, 8pm
Westbury Theatre
860 Brush Hollow Road, Westbury
800-901-4092
thetheatreatwestbury.com
Remember The Monkees and Paul Revere and the Raiders? (Alas, so do I.) Micky
and Mark are at Westbury for one night only, and at least you don’t have to take the
last train to Clarkesville to get there. They’re headlining the bill which includes the
Beatles’ tribute band, The Fab Four. The evening will feature songs from 1967 (50
summers ago, get it?). Tickets are $39.50 and up.
Movie Under the Stars:
Finding Dory
Friday, July 28, 8:30pm-10:30pm
Crocheron Park, Bayside
This could be a really nice evening out
with the kids (as long as the weather
isn’t blistering hot). Featuring the voices
of Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks,
this animated film finds our heroine, an
amnesiac fish named Dory, searching
for her long-lost parents with the help
of her pals, Nemo and Marlin. You go
girl! It’s rated PG, and it’s free.
