BY JILL DAVIS It’s April! That means it’s crunch time to file your taxes (Monday, April 15). But on a
much cheerier note, it’s also time to enjoy Passover (April 19 – April 27), Easter (April
21) and Orthodox Easter (April 28). Happy and joyous holidays to all!
In researching upcoming events for this month’s article, I noticed a lot of stuff happening
for kids, including an egg hunt (see below). This led my random thoughts to
the Easter Bunny, which I haven’t thought about since I was probably seven years old. I
wondered, “What’s a rabbit got to do with Easter?”
Well, according to History.com, some sources say the Easter bunny first arrived in
America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania. Back in
the old country, Germans had a tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or
“Oschter Haws”, in which children made nests for the furry creature to lay colored eggs.
They brought the custom here and it eventually spread across the country. Over time,
the fabled rabbit’s Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other
types of candy and gifts (much more interesting, if you ask me), and decorated baskets
replaced the nests. Children would also leave carrots for the bunny in case s/he got
hungry from all that hopping around.
I’m sure that’s more information about the Easter Bunny than you ever cared about,
but feel free to regale your family and friends with another useless bit of trivia if you
wish. Meantime, here are a few fun things coming up in April:
Apple Blossom Children’s Carnival
Saturday, April 6 & 13/Sunday,
7 & 14, 11am-6pm
Queens County Farm Museum
73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park
queensfarm.org
718-347-3276
This is a really nice way to kick off
springtime with the kids. The Farm’s annual
Children’s Carnival includes games,
carnival rides, hayrides and a Tilt-a-Whirl
ride. I’m a little nauseous just thinking
about it. Anyway, advance tickets cost
$15 or $20 at the door/free for members.
New York International Auto Show
Friday, April 19 – Sunday, April 28, 10am
Monday-Saturday,
10am-10pm/Sunday, 10am-7pm
Javits Center
655 W 34 Street, Manhattan
autoshowny.com
Did you know that this auto show dates back to
1900? I bet Henry Ford wouldn’t even recognize
today’s cars. This year’s exhibition is promised to
present “an incredible collection of cutting-edge
design and extraordinary innovation” with more than 1,000 cars and trucks on display.
The Washington Post says the NY Auto Show is “one of the most important events on
the automotive calendar.” So is remembering to get your car inspected on time, but I
digress. Tickets are $17 for adults and 7 bucks for kids.
Barnyard Egg Hunt
Saturday, April 20, 11am-3pm
Queens County Farm Museum
73-50 Little Neck Parkway,
Floral Park
queensfarm.org
718-347-3276
The Farm presents its second
event of the month with a good
old-fashioned egg hunt. Visitors
can meet Whiskers the Bunny and
take part in egg tossing and egg
rolling games. Food vendors will
also be there (I wonder if they’ll
serve egg rolls.). Tickets must be
purchased in advance, which are
$10 for children and adults/free for
members.

ones under 3 (wet-naps not included).

April 28 (times vary)

thethreateratwestbury.com

This is one circus that’s “up
close and personal”--no seat in
the theater is more than 50 feet
from the ring, which is sure to
add to the excitement. There’ll be jugglers, animals and acrobats, and what circus would
be complete without trapeze artists? There’ll be afternoon (2pm) and evening (7pm)
shows and tickets start at $29.50; call or check the website for more info.
Spring Craft Beer Festival
Saturday, April 27, 12:30-5:00pm
Belmont Race Track
2150 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont
springcraftbeerfestival.com
After all the kids-oriented events
this month, here’s something that’s
“adults only.” Held on the Opening
Day of Belmont Racetrack’s 2019 season,
this year’s Craft Beer Festival adds
a new twist: Attendees can now watch
and bet on the live racing from the festival’s new trackside location, which is situated
right at the final turn of the homestretch (so now if your horse loses, you can conveniently
drown your sorrows in the more than 100 selections of beer). Same as last year,
VIP Admission is $75, which gets you in at 12:30 and includes access to special VIP
beers that are poured only from 12:30-1:30. General Admission ($50) starts at 1:30.
