C RY D E R P O I N T 16 APRIL OOuutt & A Abboouutt A Happy Passover and a Happy Easter to all! Let’s hope April’s weather shows us some love, especially in time for the spring festivities. Passover begins on Monday, April 10 and, in a relatively rare event on the calendar, Easter falls on Sunday, April 16 for the Christian Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant churches. We can expect to see an abundance of pastel bonnets and bows on this day! Good news for procrastinators: Tax Day is Tuesday, April 18. As we all know, the usual date is April 15, but that’s a Saturday, and typically that would mean that the filing date would be the following Monday. Why Tuesday, I wondered? Turns out that Monday, April 17, is Emancipation Day, and commemorates Lincoln’s abolishment of slavery in the Washington, D.C. It’s a legal holiday in the District, which means our friends at the IRS will have the day off. I will be a little indulgent and mention that April 18 is National Columnist’s Day. The National Society of Newspaper Columnists, which was founded in 1977, created the day in memory of the columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Ernie Pyle, who was killed in World War II. Want to participate? Read a newspaper column (oh, you already are! Okay, that counts!). Dance Lessons: Swing & Waltz Thursdays, 7pm and 8:30pm Now through May 25 Temple Beth Sholom 171-39 Northern Blvd., Flushing Dancelessonsbylenny.com 718-767-4458 The location has changed but Lenny Seasonwein’s mission remains the same: for students to have fun learning classic dance styles. This spring, Lenny is offering classes on Thursdays in Swing (7pm) and the Waltz (8:30pm), just in time for all of the inevitable weddings this summer. Classes are $15 each, and there’s no contract. Oh, and there are plenty of spaces in the temple’s parking lot. So get into the swing of things and waltz on over! Film Festival Fridays Fridays, 2pm-4pm April 7, 14, 21, 28 Bay Terrace Public Library 18-36 Bell Boulevard, Bayside Queenslibrary.org/branch/ bay-terrace 718-423-7004 To be honest, lots of times the library screenings can be pretty dull. But the films coming up this month at the Bay Terrace Library are all recent Oscar winners and nominees, including one with Meryl Streep in her record-breaking 20th Academy Award nominated performance. Here you go: Manchester by the Sea, April 7; Florence Foster Jenkins, April 14; Me Before You, April 21; and Moonlight, April 28. 16 CRYDER POINT COURIER | APRIL 2017 | WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM Tony Bennett in Concert Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15, 8pm Theater at Westbury 960 Brush Hollow Road, Westbury Thetheatreatwestbury.com 516-247-5200 Tony turned 90 last August, but you wouldn’t know it from his schedule. He’s touring all over the country through the spring and summer singing his classics as well as tunes from his new album, “Tony Bennett Celebrates 90.” New York Magazine says, “…his voice is still a technical marvel, and no one else on Earth can make a lyric written eight decades ago sound as natural as a conversation at a coffee shop.” Hopefully you can still nab tickets to one of these concerts, since they will be his only New York appearances. Prices range from $79 to $250. Easter Dining Out Sunday, April 16 Restaurants are crowded on Easter, that’s for sure. If you’re among the brave (or are just too tired to cook), Bourbon Street will have a special menu and a visit from the Easter Bunny during brunch. Reservations are required and kids are full price. Also on Bell Blvd., Uncle Jack’s will be serving its traditional brunch menu from 11am till 3pm. Over at MP Taverna, which has locations in Astoria and Roslyn, brunch will be served from noon till 3pm and dinner from 3pm till 9pm. Among MP’s special Easter offerings is roasted lamb with Greek lemon potatoes for $29.95. Yum! Loretta Lynn in Concert Friday, April 21, 2017 at 8 pm Tilles Center 720 Northern Blvd., Brookville Tillescenter.org 516-299-3100 Country legend Loretta Lynn will bring her home style country music to the area this month for one performance only. At 85, she received a 2017 Grammy nomination for her new album, “Full Circle,” her first album of new recordings in more than 10 years. Loretta is known for being humble. She says, “I ain’t a star—a star is something up in the night sky.” I think a lot of folks would disagree that she ain’t a star. Tickets go for $40, $55, $75 and $95. BY JILL DAVIS
