St. Patrick’s Day Dining Thursday, March 17 Various locations They say that everybody’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, so don’t be surprised if you have a hankering for corned beef and cabbage when you wake up that morning. You can count on the usual local suspects to accommodate, including Erin’s Isle and Shenanigans in Whitestone and Donovan’s and Monahan & Fitzgerald’s in Bayside, to name just a few. Wherever you go, reservations are recommended. And be advised to wear something green! 16 cryder point courier | MARCH 2016 | WWW.QNS.COM Can’t wait to see if the groundhog was right and we’ll be getting an early spring. It isn’t far away as the clocks spring forward to Daylight Saving Time on March 13 and the days start getting longer (yay!). Spring officially arrives on March 20, right after St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th and just before an early Easter on March 27. The Moscow Festival Ballet: Giselle Sunday, March 20, 3pm Queensborough Community College Performing Arts Center 222-05 56 Avenue, Bayside 718-631-6311 As classic ballets go, this one’s a real heartbreaker: A village girl falls in love with a man who is not all he seems, and when she finds out his deception she dies of a broken heart. But fear not--she is transformed into a spirit and fights to save her lover in the woods that are haunted by the ghosts of jilted women (sounds like an episode of The Bachelor). Tickets are $39 and $42. Queens County Farm Museum: Barnyard Egg Hunt Saturday, March 26, 11am-3pm Queens County Farm Museum 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park 718-347-3276 It will be an “egg-stravaganza” (groan) at the Queens County Farm Museum on the March 26 as kids of all ages participate in egg hunts, egg tossing and egg rolling. Whiskers the Bunny will be making an appearance, so needless to say the Bunny Hop will also be involved. But if that’s not your thing, visit the farm animals or jump on a hayride. The Museum advises that this is a very popular event and recommends that folks arrive early. Admission is free for members of the Museum and $5 for everyone else. Easter Sunday Brunch Cruise Sunday, March 27, 12pm-2pm Chelsea Piers, Pier 61 11th Avenue and 24th Street, New York www.spiritcruises.com We know that lots of restaurants will be serving special Easter brunches and dinners, but if you’re in the mood for something a little different, how about a cruise? The building was recently sold after the retirement of co-founder Jim Fitzgerald, according to co-founder John Monahan. The Irish bar has been at 214-17 41st Ave. since opening in February 1987. Monahan and Fitzgerald were also formerly owners of the building next door to the bar, where seasonal frozen treat shop Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices is located on the first floor. That site was included in the sale as well.Monahan said the new owner bought the property as an investment and will allow the tavern and Ralph’s to continue operating in their current locations.“The properties were sold, but not the businesses,” Monahan said. “The businesses will be here for a long time to come.”Monahan & Fitzgerald is reportedly under new management, and decision-makers at the saloon have negotiated a lease agreement for the near future, with the intention of securing an even longer commitment from the new owners.“Nothing’s going to change here for a while,” Monahan said, adding that many of his employees have been working at the pub for a number of years.
