two Test series.
Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams
said, “We have some good young
batsman in the team who we believe
will form the future of West Indies
cricket.”
“We saw some very good signs of
development earlier this year in the
Test matches when we played so very
well to beat England and we want to
see them grow and become outstanding
players for the West Indies. We
have taken steps to have Brian and
‘Ronnie’ work with these players, who
have demonstrated a willingness to
learn and succeed,” he said adding,
“we know we still have the passion
and love for West Indies cricket and
are eager to assist and share their
information with the present generation.”
Lara, 50, is West Indies’ leading
run-scorer in Tests with 11,953 runs
from 131 matches with 34 centuries.
He quit international cricket following
the historic ICC World Cup in
the Caribbean in 2007.
Sarwan gathered 5,842 runs in 87
Test matches, including 15 centuries,
with a top score of 291 against England
at Bridgetown, Barbados.
The 39-year-old middle-order batsman
also featured in West Indies
preparation camp in April in Barbados
ahead of the Tri-nation Series in
Ireland.
Following the Antigua Test, West
Indies will face India in the final Test
starting on Aug. 30 at Sabina Park,
Jamaica.

Organisers point out that with the
2020 Olympics less than a year away,
many of these badminton athletes will
be using this year’s CAREBACO Tournament
to their advantage as a way to
obtain Olympic qualifying points.
The Barbados doubles gold medal
was one of five up for grabs in the junior
section.
Contests among the seniors began
Monday.
Barbados’ Scantlebury had a good
run in the junior section. In addition to
the gold, he accounted for two silvers,
losing in the men’s singles to Joseph Lu
of Canada; and coming second again
when he paired up with Sobers Robyn
for the mixed doubles and lost to the
Guyanese pair of Tyrese Jeffrey and
Priyanna Ramdhani.
Guyanese Ramdhani is proving herself
one to watch as in addition to the
mixed doubles gold, she also held gold
in the women’s singles, and paired with
Trinidad’s Chequeda De Boulet to win
the women’s doubles.
The Bajan top junior, Scantlebury,
blamed his singles final loss to Canada’s
Lu to a series of errors.
“It wasn’t my best display, but I came
out and tried my best, and I hope that
next year I grow stronger especially
with the tournaments I have coming on
this summer,” he said.
sion, with came off 94 balls.
In form Rohit Sharma was unfortunate
to get run out early in the chase
after a terrible mix out.
Fabien Allen (2-40) was the top
wicket-taker, while Kemar Roach was
the only other bowler to take one
wicket.
When West Indies chose to bat after
winning the toss they got a flying start
from Chris Gayle (72) and Evin Lewis
(43) to reach 115 when the first wicket
of Gayle fell to a catch by Kholi.
Gayle playing with what looked like
his final 301 ODI game came out in
a positive mood and put the Indian
bowlers to the sword, reaching his half
century off just 30 balls.
He followed Lewis after striking 72
off 41 balls with right fours and five
sixes.
When the Windies went off at the
rain break they were 158 for two after
22 overs. On the resumption, they were
able to add 82 off the remaining 13
overs to end on 240 for 7.

Cornwall in
Test squad
By Azad Ali
Off-spinner and all-rounder Rahkeem
Cornwall is set to make his
long-awaited Test debut after being
named in a 13-man squad for the first
Test against India starting next week
in Antigua.
The burly 26-year-old is the only
new face in the squad, which also
includes uncapped Shamarh Brooks,
who was a part of the team for the
England series earlier this year but
did not feature.
Cornwall has taken 260 wickets
from 55 fist-class matches at an average
of 24, dominating for the West
Indies A and for domestic franchise
Leeward Islands Hurricane.
Hard-hitting opening batsman,
Chris Gayle who wants to play a Test
match before he retires from Test
cricket was omitted from the squad.
He will probably play in the second
and final Test in his home ground,
Jamaica.
