Flatbush Avenue
The Flatbush Ave. BID recently completed
an art competition titled “Distinction”
seeking art which reflected
the uniqueness of Flatbush. Following
a pop-up gallery in several Flatbush
Avenue store windows and voting by
a panel of Caribbean art professionals
and the community at large, the art
submissions were narrowed down to 11
finalists whose art was reproduced on
23 banners.
Participating artists drew their
inspiration from a variety of sources.
Monica Crespo’s photograph “Jab
Jab” captures “the essence of Flatbush,
Brooklyn” through an image from the
West Indian American Day Parade.
Meanwhile, 13-year-old Megan Summer
began drawing during extended
hospital stays for kidney treatment.
She used the different tones in her
drawing “The Shades of Blue” to show
“our neighborhood becoming calmer,
healthier and the power we have.”
Artist Patrice Robinson was inspired
for her painting, “Heavy is the Head
that Wears the Crown” after the 2016
presidential election “to illustrate the
feelings that people of color have when
they are faced with the potential of
their future.” Based on her memories
of her older brother’s high school
graduation years earlier, she focused
on a piece of the experience of the
many immigrant families from the
Caribbean who “constantly strive for
greatness and are making their mark
in America and around the world.”
More information on all the artists
can be found in the Distinction section
of the BID’s website (www.Flatbush-
AveBID.com). The banners will be on
display on select lampposts throughout
the Flatbush Ave. BID (Flatbush Ave.
from Parkside Ave. to Cortelyou Rd.)
through the end of March 2020.
