Lenny Green honors single mothers at Family Day
By Tangerine Clarke
Infectious beats revved up
Bedford-Stuyvesant last Saturday,
at the biggest block party in
Brooklyn, since the coronavirus
pandemic shutdown.
Thanks to Lenny Green,
host of the highly rated show,
“The Quiet Storm” on WBLS
107.5 FM, fans had a spectacular
return to the outdoors at his
16th Annual Family Day in Von
King Park Amphitheater.
What made this event so special,
however, was the touching
Mama Green “Women of Dignity”
awards. Green, a passionate
advocate for single mothers,
created the award to honor his
single mother many years ago.
Mama Green, who died five
years ago, would have been proud
to see, Maxine Smith, Stephanie
Frierson, Muriel Agee, and
Shanekah Turner, being presented
with plaques and red roses,
as her other son, Muata Green,
held-up a collage of pictures of
her participation at the annual
event.
The legendary host with the
baritone voice, shared, that he
randomly selected the ladies — a
symbolic gesture from the heart
of the superstar, who said, “it
takes a lot for any person to raise
a child, but if a woman is subjected

to doing so on her own,
then she deserves the praise and
honor.”
After asking the ladies to
explain what was the most important
thing in being a mother,
Green extended blessings to the
caregivers who had the future of
their children in their hands.
The Crown Heights native,
whose Tee shirt read “Born, Bred
& Made by Brooklyn,” and who
is celebrating 25 years in radio,
also presented Jamie Williams,
Assembly member for the 59th
district, with the Community
Award and flowers.
Dr. Sampson Davis, an ER
physician, got a huge response
during a Q&A segment on the
topic of the coronavirus, while
Jacqueline Limehouse, CEO
of resource center ‘My Sister’s
Lighthouse’ (866-768-19870)
joined Indy Smith, co-host of the
Quiet Storm, and Green on stage
to talk about domestic violence,
that almost took away her life.
The fascinating, Nancy Jones
aka Mama Jones, of the reality
show “Love & Hip-Hop,” and
mother of Rapper Jim Jones,
received red roses from Green,
a former singer who debuted
his talents at the world Famous
Apollo Theatre’s Amateur Night
as a teenager.
The show ran for hours, bringing
singer Gerald Alston of the
legendary group ‘The Manhattans”
who brought back fond
memories of hits, “Lets kiss and
say Goodbye” and “You are my
Shining Star,” songs from his
musical career that spans 59
years.
Ted ‘Wizard’ Mills of the 70s
R&B soul group Blue Magic, put
on quite a show for the audience,
before songstress Jasmine Nicole,
and singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist
Obasi J, brother
of murdered rapper Pop Smoke,
entertained the audience.
Green, Billboard Magazine’s
1999 Air Personality of the Year
Award recipient, whose calming
voice, and pleasurable compilation
of music attracts thousands
of fans to his syndicated nightly
show, cheered on Deejay SJ,
Deejay DJ, and Deejay QUA, who
took turns keeping the crowd
jiving to the classics, heard on
acclaimed, WBLS 107.5 FM.
