Thirteen-year old, Anaya
Lee Willabus, author of four
books, spent Memorial Day
handing out free masks to
residents who took advantage
of the COVID-19 eased restriction
policy to picnic in Canarsie
Park, Brooklyn.
The NYC Mayor’s office
donated 1000 masks to The
Stalwarts Youth Corporation,
the young lady’s organization,
committed to empowering
youth through intellectual
and cultural development.
Anaya told Caribbean Life
that she was happy to lead the
distribution of face masks, as
part of her community outreach,
and continued volunteerism,
adding that it was
important for those who did
not have a mask to get one.
Anaya, who published her
first book, “The Day Mohan
Found His Confidence” at age
8 after vising Guyana in 2014,
her parents’ birth place, is an
award-winning author who is
dedicated to giving back to her
community.
Mother, Dimple Willabus,
a community leader, said
the distribution was Anaya’s
brainchild, noting that she
instilled in her children the
importance of activism that
must start at a young age.
Willabus, who serves on
the board of The Stalwarts
Youth Corporation, joined her
daughter in the distribution.
She wants to be a role model,

in her backyard to volunteer
beside Anaya, who was also
joined by older sister Chantelle
Grant, brother, Brandon,
and brother-in-law, Brian

Community advocate Tony
Herbert stated that it was
important to let youth know
they were supported in their
efforts, and acknowledged
Anaya for her community
service.
“I am here to support
Anaya and her mom Dimple.
We must encourage youth to
ensure they are taking up the
citizenship role to encourage
proper PPE, and social distancing,”
