Vincy T10 cricket being played CWI financial
By Nelson A. King
For the first time since March,
competitive cricket involving players
of a Full Member team returned after
a long hiatus due to the coronavirus
pandemic.
The Vincy Premier League (VPL), a
franchise-based T10 was played from
May 22 to 31 in St. Vincent and the
Grenadines.
This will be the inaugural season
of the VPL, a six-team tournament,
started from May 22 to 31, at the
Arnos Vale Sporting Complex in St
Vincent.
Although the Caribbean country
became the first country to resume
cricket since the pandemic haled all
sport in March, the VPL will be the
first instance when the game will be
played in a Full Member region comprising
international players.
West Indies players to get their salaries

The VPL comprised 30 matches,
which will be streamed live, with
three games scheduled each day. A
total of 72 players were picked by
the six franchises via a draft held on
May 11.
The VPL was hosted by St. Vincent
and the Grenadines Cricket Association
whose president, Kishore Shallow,
is also the vice-president of
Cricket West Indies (CWI).
According to Shallow, there were
18 positives cases of COVID-19 in St
Vincent and the Grenadines of which
10 had successfully recovered.
Spectators were asked to practice
social distancing.

West Indies cricketers will eventually
get their salaries. This was
revealed by Cricket West Indies CEO
Johnny Grave who said the board is
now processing payments for International
matches that were due to
them.
He said it has been difficult and
the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic
situation has not made it any
better but we are taking steps in the
right direction when it comes to the
finances.
“We are at the moment processing
payments for our women and
men international players. The women
cricketers will be getting their payments
over the next couple of days for
the Twent20 (T20) World Cup, while
the men will be getting their fees for

the Ireland and Sri Lanka tour. This
will mean we are up to date with payments
for our international cricketers,”
said Grave.
Grave added that there are still funds
outstanding and this is for regional players
who participated in the West Indies
championships but this will be done
soon.
He also said that organizing finances
have been difficult during this period of
COVID-19 pandemic for CWI, “but we are
doing our best to get to those players.”
“We owe them their match fees for
the January, February and March period,
We are trying our best to work
through this difficult time,” Grave

the board last December.
“We had 26 recommendations
coming out of that report and it is up,
to the (CEO) Johnny Graves and CRO
Barry Thomas,” said Skerritt.
The CWI president said, “the crisis
has put our already poor financial
state into ICU. It is like going to the
doctor with an illness and as he is
about to prescribe the medication
you get a stroke.”
“The board had to carry some serious
expenses and one of the biggest
is the professional cricket league that
is played in the Caribbean. We have
about 100 cricketers on retainers and
the board has had to fund this professional
league,” he told Guardian
Media.
Skerritt noted that the home tours
where the West Indies will normally
make a profit have been affected by
the COVID-19.
He is questioning the credibility of
the report and its findings and that of
the author.
Cameron believes that there is a
continuation of the smear campaign
against him despite his accessibility
since he was never asked any questions
by CWI or the person who conducted
the report whether orally or in writing.
The ESPNcricifo piece stated that at
a director’s meeting dates March 10,
2018, a resolution was passed authorizing
an honorarium of $50,000 for
then then president for having “worked

beyond the call of duty” to get the ICC
to allocate the $128 million to CWI.
The honorarium was paid in two payments
of $25,000 on June 5, 2018 and
July 31, 2019.
Cameron said every single payment
whether to him or otherwise was
approved by the Board of Directors.
The former CWI president attorneys
have given the board 48 hours to produce
the report and if they fail to do
that, he will seek assistance from the
High Court.
Cameron said once he gets the report
he will be willing to respond to all articles
in 21 days.

worker going into a hospital every
day. It’s the same risk they they’re
putting their lives at risk and they’ve
still to make money. The longer we
stay off the field, the longer it takes
for us to actually make some money,”
he said.
England’s players will be returning
to individual training this week
with the hope of starting a three-
Test series against the West Indies
on July 8.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has
been in contact with an enlarged
training squad of a round 30 players
to let them know more details about
the tour, but Holder has echoed the
sentiments of Ricky Skerritt, CWI’s
president, in saying that no player
would be forced to travel to the UK if
they did not feel safe.
