March 12 was the one-year anniversary
of the day the Brilla Charter school
buildings closed due to COVID-19.
Yet, throughout the darkness and
devastation of the pandemic, the staff
and parents have worked hard to make
sure the kids still received a proper
education. The students responded to
learning from home and far exceeded
expectations.
In the spring of 2020 there was a 91
% daily attendance rate, 750 Chromebooks
were distributed and $300,000
was raised to support families.
Throughout the past school year 60
% of the families opted for in-person
learning, $500,00 was invested in
COVID-19 safety equipment and nearly
100 hours was dedicated to crisis counseling
for staff, students and parents.
The kids also excelled in the classroom.
Some of those achievements
include:
•70% of Miss Chavez’s kindergarten
class is reading at or above grade level
• Twenty four Brilla College Prep
Middle school students got accepted to
Catholic high schools
• 60 % Brilla kindergarten through
second grade students grew one or
more STEP levels this trimester
Lastly, the school’s in person and
remote attendance out shined NYC public
school’s as 93 % of Brilla students
attended in person, compared to 86 %
for public schools and it had 90 % for
remote learning, while public schools
had 83 %.
Members of the Brilla Schools Network’s
Enrollment and Outreach Team,
Alexa Bonilla and Stephanie Frias, published
a letter explaining why Brilla
has such a positive impact on the community.
“One important feature that sets us
apart is that we view families as the
primary educators of their children,”
they said in the letter. “Families come
to school as pillars of the community.
We seek to partner with families and to
support them in their task of educating
their children. We recognize that, when
a family enrolls their child in a Brilla
school, they enter into a sacred trust
with us. We take this responsibility very
seriously.”
The ladies also stress how important
it is for the staff to help the kids mature
intellectually, socially, and physically
into young men and women.
The school also partners with El
Camino, an optional Catholic after
school program. To help kids develop
physically, the program includes martial
arts and dance.
