Persaud to host Housing Resource fair Schenectady mayor
BY NELSON A. KING
Brooklyn Sen. Roxanne J. Persaud
will hold a major “Housing Resource
Fair” for constituents in her 19th Senate
District in Brooklyn at the Canarsie
High School cafeteria on Feb. 29.
“This event is a major resource for
both homeowners and tenants, helping
them navigate the various City or State
programs they may be qualifi ed to receive,”
the Guyanese-born Persaud
said. “Many tenants and homeowners
struggle to fi nd affordable housing or
need help maintaining their homes.
“Increasing property taxes, struggles
with utility bills, and limited affordable
housing options are only the
tip of the iceberg when it comes to the
housing burdens within my district
and across this City and State,” she
added. “Holding these Housing Resource
Fairs can help New Yorkers
learn about services and programs
they may have not previously known
they were eligible for, which help create
signifi cant savings in the pockets
for many of my constituents.”
Persaud said homeowners will
learn how to apply for exemptions and
lower their property tax bills, or how
to seek rent relief.
“Abatements such as STAR, E-Star,
SCHE/DHE, Veterans and Clergy specifi
ed can help ease the burden of property
taxes; additionally, senior tenants
and tenants with disabilities can apply
Caribbean Life, F 34 ebruary 21-27, 2020
for SCRIE or DRIE to help freeze their
current rent,” she said.
Persaud said this event is open to
the public, adding that representatives
will be on hand from the NYC Department
of Finance, NYC Department
of Environmental Protection, NHS
Brooklyn Community Development
Corporation, Inc., NYC Department
of Sanitation, the Brooklyn Public Library
and the NYPD Community Affairs,
to help answer questions regarding
fi le assistance inquiries.
Persaud urged interested homeowners
to bring to the fair: Picture ID;
2018 tax returns or income document
for all owners; DD214 or discharge papers
(for veterans); trust documents (if
applicable); and clergy verifi cation letter
on offi cial letterhead (clergy).
For housing assistance for tenants,
the senator also urges constituents to
bring: Picture ID; 2017 tax returns, W2,
or 1099 statements; income documents
for all household members; copies of
two most recent leases; and Social Security
disability award letter (if applicable).
