Washington, D.C.-based Organization
of American States
(OAS) says it has agreed to join
efforts with the Latin American
and Caribbean Network
for Democracy (REDLAD) to
strengthen civil society for the
defense of human rights.
The OAS said on Wednesday
that the agreement, signed
by its Secretary General Luis
Almagro, on a visit to Panama,
also seeks to promote sustainable
development and social cohesion
in the hemisphere.
Almagro said the signing of
the agreement was “a step forward
in strengthening the participation
of civil society in the
different political spaces of the
OAS.
“We need clear rules so that
the different spokespeople of
civil society can express their
positions in the organization,”
he said.

that the two institutions
have carried out joint efforts to
strengthen the participation of
civil society in all areas of society.
“REDLAD has accompanied
the efforts to the OAS to
strengthen the participation
of civil society in the various
events of the organization, like
assemblies and Summits of the
Americas,” he said.
“That is why we have made
available various methodologies
for dialogue and have also
supported the building of civil
society proposals, such as the
coalition system,” said Obarrio.
The OAS said REDLAD has
participated as a civil society
organization with the hemispheric
body for more than a
decade.
SUNY names building
after black public servant
BY NELSON A. KING
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo
on Friday announced that
the State University of New
York (SUNY) Administration
Building in downtown
Albany will be renamed
the H. Carl McCall
SUNY Building in the
honor of the trailblazing
black public servant who
served New York as a longtime
chairman of the SUNY
Board of Trustees, State
Comptroller and ambassador
to the United Nations,
among many other distinguished
capacities.
The governor also
awarded McCall with the
Governor’s Medal of Public
Service for his long and
distinguished career in
service to the State of New
York.
“Carl McCall is a friend
and a true public servant
who has graced this great
state with more than 50
years of distinguished service
and leadership, and all
New Yorkers are better off
for it,” Cuomo said. “While
his achievements are beyond
count, his legacy will be as a
champion for those in need,
and for helping restore faith
in the ability of government
to make a positive difference
in people’s lives.
McCall said “it has been
my honor to be one of many
sources of leadership and
influence to provide more
for New Yorkers, particularly
by expanding opportunities
for all students to
get a higher education, and
I am humbled by the governor’s
acknowledgment and
celebration of my work.
“Know that my accomplishments
were in partnership
with the governor, the
Legislature, SUNY Board
of Trustees, the chancellor,
and many officials
over my years of public service,”
McCall added. “And,
it is also the result of feedback
from the people I have
served, especially the students
I have seen achieve
a better life through their
own hard work and desire
to do more.”
