Canada PM cancels
trip to the Caribbean
By Nelson A. King
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau on Sunday cancelled this
week’s trip to the Caribbean, where
he was expected to attend the Intersessional
Meeting of the Conference of
Heads of Government of the Caribbean
Community (CARICOM) in Barbados.
A statement from the Offi ce of the
Prime Minister said on Sunday that
Trudeau spoke with CARICOM leaders,
informing that them that he will
be unable to attend this week’s meeting
“as he will remain in Canada to
continue to work with his ministers
to address current infrastructure disruptions
occurring across the country,
and work towards a resolution to
restore rail service.”
The statement said that Trudeau
on Sunday held calls with Prime Minister
of Barbados and current Chair
of CARICOM Mia Mottley, Secretary
General of CARICOM Irwin LaRocque
and Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew
Holness.
“Prime Minister Trudeau expressed
his regret that he will not personally
attend this week’s gathering
of CARICOM leaders,” the statement
said. “Prime Minister Mottley, as conference
host, welcomed the participation
of Minister of Foreign Affairs
François-Philippe Champagne on behalf
of Prime Minister Trudeau.”
With over two million Canadians
travelling to CARICOM countries
annually, the Offi ce of the Canadian
Prime Minister said Canada has
“strong ties with the 15 Member States
and fi ve Associate Members on a wide
range of issues, including trade, security
and defense and governance.
“The leaders reaffi rmed the importance
of Canada’s relations with CARICOM
countries, rooted in longstanding
partnerships, shared values, and
deep people to people ties,” the Offi ce
said. “They looked forward to fi nding
an opportunity to meet again.”
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
(CBC) also said on Sunday that
Trudeau’s cancelled trip came amid
continued disruption to train service
across parts of Canada by Indigenous
demonstrators and their supporters.
During his visit to the region, CBC
said Trudeau had planned “to bring
his pitch for a UN Security Council
seat” at the two-day gathering of CARICOM
leaders.
Trudeau returned to Canada
late Friday after spending a week in
Ethiopia, Kuwait, Senegal and Germany,
and spent the weekend in private
meetings, CBC said.
It said the prime minister’s decision
to cancel the Caribbean trip came
“amid mounting pressure from business
leaders and politicians who want
the government to take more of an active
role in resolving the crisis, which
some say is damaging the economy
and could lead to shortages of propane
and other consumer goods.”
A Barbados Government Information
Service (BGIS) statement said on
Saturday that Trudeau was expected
to arrive in Barbados on Monday for a
two-day visit “that will see him attending
the 31st Intersessional Conference
of Heads of Government of the Caribbean
Community (CARICOM) as the
Special Guest.”
