Maimonides Heart & Vascular Institute in the Community
Caribbean Life, June 14–20, 2019 43
Maimonides Medical Center
recently hosted a free heart
health lecture with dinner
and heart screenings at Our
Lady of Miracles Church in
Canarsie. The lecture led by
Dr. Inna Nelipovich, Director
of the Maimonides Women’s
Heart Program educated
guests on the importance
of knowing the signs
and symptoms of heart
disease, the role of
genetics, how to adopt a
healthy lifestyle through
diet and exercise, and
what Maimonides is
doing to achieve the best
cardiac outcomes in New
York State. Over 60 guests
were screened for carotid
artery plaque, thyroid
nodules, body mass index
(BMI), and blood pressure.
In addition to the
heart health lecture, Ms.
Roxanne Watson, an organ
donor recipient who received
a new heart in 2008, shared
her story of survival and raised
awareness about the shortage
of registered organ donors in
New York State. Ms. Watson is
alive today thanks to Michael
Bovill, a 23-year-old E3 Fireman
with the U.S. Coast Guard who
was in an accident that took
his life. Mr. Bovill’s final act of
selflessness saved Ms. Watson’s
life as well as the lives of four
others. Maimonides has teamed
up with LiveOnNY, an organ
procurement organization, to
educate the community on
the issues surrounding organ
donation as well as sharing
real stories of all the men and
women, like Ms. Watson, who
now have a new chance at life.
