Black Family Census Day attracts thousands of New Yorkers
By Nelson A. King
The Center for Law and
School Justice (CLSJ) at
Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers
College says that its Black
Family Census Day on
Memorial Day attracted
thousands of New Yorkers.
According to Imani Dawson,
CLSJ’s communications
director, Black Family
Census Day was “a virtual
celebration of families and
culture, centering on the
Memorial Day holiday, traditionally
a time for parties,
barbecues and the unofficial
start of summer.”
He said the Day focused
on “the importance of completing
the Census for New
York’s African-descended
communities.”
“The coronavirus pandemic
has disproportionately
impacted Black and
Brown communities,
upending lives and neighborhoods,
making the link
between the Census count
and the federal allocation
for hospitals, schools, and
other vital programs crystal
clear,” Dawson said.
With the help of co-sponsor
Ifetayo Cultural Arts
Academy, community partners
Caribbean L 6 ife, May 29-June 4, 2020
and elected officials,
including New York Public
Advocate Jumaane Williams,
State Sen. Zellnor
Myrie and Councilmember
Laurie Cumbo, Dawson said
Black Family Census Day
“attracted thousands of New
Yorkers to the event, bolstering
their understanding
of the Census and the ways
in which the data is used to
allocate federal dollars and
political representation.”
He said Black Family
Census Day was launched
with a branded digital campaign
“powered by community
stakeholders sharing
their reasons for completing
the Census.”
Dawson said “a critical
conversation” was then held
with local leaders about
“the current state of Black
New Yorkers, the best way
forward and how filling out
the Census can strengthen
our collective future.”
He said the Day “then
transitioned to a family
friendly day of culture and
fun curated by Ifetayo Cultural
Arts Academy.”
Dawson said the Day culminated
with a three-hour
Census Completion Party,
featuring world renowned
DJs encouraging the audience
to complete the Census.
“We’re thrilled with the
Citywide response and
incredibly grateful for the
efforts of our partners who
were integral to the day’s
success,” he said.
The multi-part day of
activities ran from 10:00
am – 7:00 pm on Zoom and
Facebook.
CLSJ, whose interim
executive director is lawyer
Lurie Daniel Favors, said its
mission is “to provide quality
legal advocacy, training
and expert services to
people of African descent
and other marginalized
groups.”
In addition, CLSJ said it
conducts research, advocacy
and litigation on racial
justice issues on behalf of
community organizations
and groups that “promote
human, national, and international
understanding.”
