The Bronx Council on the Arts announces
that the 2020 BRIO Award application
cycle is now open. BRIO disburses
awards of $5,000 to support
Bronx artists working in literary, media,
performing and visual arts. Deadline
for applications is December 16, 2019.
Launched in 1989, the BRIO award program
was a pioneer effort to support the
arts in the Bronx. BRIO is a unique award
in the fi ve boroughs, and carries with it a
long tradition of providing essential support
to Bronx creatives based solely on
artistic merit.
BCA has worked to make BRIO criteria
clearer and more open to the wealth
of artists in the borough with a lens that
contemplates artists’ diversity and distinct
approaches. Acknowledging the
growth of diverse art forms, since last
year, BRIO has also incorporated the
“Street Art” category in hopes of attracting
new submissions from young artists
practicing this discipline.
Adjudication panels comprised of
seasoned artists and arts professionals
from outside the Bronx review submissions
anonymously, prioritizing works
that demonstrate an innovative approach
to the discipline; a high level of expertise
and skill; ingenuity and rigor in the production
of the work; awareness of the
medium within a historical context, and a
compelling vision and original voice.
BCA has distributed more than
$1,500,000 to 481 artists over the past
three decades, thanks to the support of
the New York City Department of Cultural
Affairs. As a pioneer for cultural equity
and inclusion, BCA encourages the
submission of works by artists from under
represented communities, considering
applications in a transparent process
regardless of the artists’ race, ethnicity,
gender, gender identity, age, socio-economic
status, national origin, sexual orientation,
physical ability, or religion.
BRIO winners will receive their awards
during a celebration in June, 2020. BCA
requires winners to complete a one-time
community service activity known as Artists
for Community Enrichment (ACE)
within a year of receiving the award.
The deadline for applications is Monday,
December 16, 11:59 p.m. Bronx resident
artists may apply in any one of the
following categories:
Literary Arts: Fiction, Non-Fiction,
Poetry, Playwriting, Screenwriting, Illustrated
Text
Media Arts: Digital Arts, Film or Video
(Narrative/Documentary/Experimental),
Film Animation
Performing Arts: Acting, Choreography,

Illustration Painting, Photography,

Visual Arts (3-D): Installation Art,

Applicants must be 18 years or older,
live in the Bronx, and may not be enrolled
as full-time graduate or undergraduate
students. Individuals who work for BCA
or who received a BRIO award in 2019
are ineligible. Winners are chosen by a
panel of multidisciplinary arts professionals.
Work samples are reviewed without
the artist’s identity attached to ensure
transparency.
