To the Editor,
In his latest rant the resident
hard-right columnist is
distressed by the fact that our
country is not a theocracy,
arguing that the separation
of church and state required
by our Constitution is actually
a Progressive plot against
Judeo-Christian values. The
hypocrisy of the notion that
God-fearing conservatives are
protecting America from the
insidious Progressive movement
is astounding, given that
every attempt to pass legislation
designed to relieve the
suffering of those less fortunate
is sabotaged by these Bible
thumping pseudo-Christians.
The author also disingenuously
claims that systemic
racism does not exist since
racism is no longer codifi ed in
law. This fantastic assertion is
made repeatedly by the columnist,
in deference to the big lie
theory, which holds that the
most colossal mistruth will
be accepted if repeated with
enough frequency.
Study after study has demonstrated
that non-white individuals
still suffer from racist
economic and environmental
policies. Recent news stories
have highlighted how home
appraisals differ depending
on the race of the homeowner.
Undesirable polluting facilities
such as power plants,
waste treatment plants and
highways are located not in
Country Club but in the South
Bronx. Coincidence?
The intellectual dishonesty
continues week after
week, notwithstanding the alleged
censorship of conservative
voices claimed by the author.

St. Barnabas Church to host
Irish language mass Saturday
The Ancient Order of Hibernians
(AOH) will join with
Gaelic Societies, Irish community
groups and parishioners
in the strongly Irish
Woodlawn-McLean area to
host an Irish language Mass
on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2:30
p.m. Rev. Brendan Fitzgerald,
will celebrate the Mass
in Gaelic, followed by a brief
installation ceremony for
newly elected Bronx County
offi cers.
Last year, under AOH
National President Danny
O’Connell, the Bronx AOH
Irish language mass became
a national AOH event viewed
by Hibernians across the
U.S. and in Ireland via the
St. Barnabas Facebook and
AOH youtube. More than
7,000 people viewed the mass,
many of them seeing a Gaelic
mass for the fi rst time.
Irish-English translations
of the liturgy will be
made available so that anyone
can read the prayers
in English as they hear the
mass said in Irish. A special
musical program will be provided
by the Dawn Doherty
Academy of Irish music and
Sean Ruane.
Each year, the Bronx
County Irish Language Mass
at St. Barnabas is dedicated
to all those who have kept
the Irish language and culture
alive. To symbolize this
theme, the AOH fl yer depicts
a Mass Rock where Gaelic
speakers gathered in secret
to hear outlawed masses said
by outlawed priests in defi -
ance of English penal laws.
“The Irish language is
an important and indestructible
part of our Irish heritage,”
said Bronx County
AOH President Martin Galvin.
“Measures to wipe out
the Irish language began
even before penal laws to
wipe out the Catholic religion
in Ireland. Ireland’s
cherished landmarks include
Mass Rocks, where
Gaelic speakers risked
death or imprisonment simply
to worship. Even today a
simple Irish language Act is
still denied to six county nationalists.”
This year the Irish Mass
will include a special remembrance
of the 10 Irishmen
who sacrifi ced their
lives in the Hunger Strike
which ended forty years ago
on Oct. 3, 1981. It is especially
appropriate to remember
that part of their legacy
was the rebirth of the Irish
language which these men
inspired.
The mass will be held in
the main church on Martha
Avenue near East 241st
Street, followed by a brief
installation ceremony of
Bronx County offi cers, with
New York State President
John Manning presiding.
Mark your calendars, as
The Lynch Golf Group will
once again be hosting the
Lynch Golf Outing this year
on Oct. 15, with the after
party at the American Turners
Club.
While The Lynch Golf
Group usually selects a family
to donate proceeds to each
year, this year they have
changed things up a bit. Ordinarily,
they are able to raise
signifi cant funds for the donee
family with the help of
our neighborhood bars, restaurants
and businesses, who
have always donated generously
to support our efforts.
This year however, those
businesses are themselves recovering,
having sustained
signifi cant losses and endured
hardships resulting
from the Covid-19 pause and
restrictions on their establishments.
It would be rough to ask
any business owner to donate
in these times. The Lynch
Golf Group is fortunate, however,
that the golf outing and
after party raise money on
their own, separate and apart
from sponsorships. Since the
resultant anticipated proceeds
would thus be smaller
than what we usually raise
for a donee family, we thought
it would be better to donate
the smaller purse to a cause
near and dear to the heart of
this group, Ground Zero 360.
Ground Zero 360 is a nonprofi
t traveling museum
which honors the sacrifi ce of
the victims and families of
the 9/11 terror attacks. The
traveling exhibition, containing
original works of art
and 9/11 artifacts, allows the
spectator to step into the past
and explore the startling aftermath
of one of the most
tragic events in American
history from a New Yorker’s
perspective. Victims’ family
members and fi rst responders
travel with the exhibition
to educate the public who cannot
visit the Sept. 11 Museum
in New York City to make
sure we “Never Forget.” In
an age where many schools
do not even teach 9/11 out of
fear that it may cause negative
sentiment toward a particular
group or groups, this
Ground Zero 360 steps up and
makes sure the voice of the
families and victims is never
silenced.
The Lynch family has
been involved with them for
years, as Michael’s story is
one of their earliest exhibit
presentations. This year, they
added Steven “Ya-Ya” Cioffi , a
Throggs Neck NYPD offi cer
who lost his life to a 9/11-related
cancer in 2013, to the exhibit.
We invite you to check
out the Ground Zero 360
page at https://www.groundzero360.
org. We will also
count on you to come out in
support of the golf outing on
Oct. 15. Thanks as always to
the most amazing neighborhood
in New York City.
