There is strength in
numbers, so the more
merchants that join and
get involved, the more of
a force we become. We can
achieve more for our businesses
and our community
as a unifi ed merchants association.
BY GENE DEFRANCIS
Your community is your
business. That’s been our
motto. So mind your business.
Allerton’s progress is
embarrassing and hurting
the business improvement
district’s claim to fame that
‘no one can save you but us’
fallacy.
Fact is Allerton International
Merchants operates
more effi ciently and stronger
than most BIDs. Those
BIDs that are most successful
were born out of a strong
merchants association.
Allerton is a small business
district. We don’t want
large chain stores that hire
outside of our community.
When you blatantly tell
us that the mom and pop
shops that can’t afford a BID
shouldn’t be in business and
that they are just ‘delaying
the inevitable’, we take offense.
Our merchants will not go
out of business if we sustain
our merchants association.
Several of our merchants
will go out of business if we
went forward with a BID. It’s
really that simple.We are not
turning our back on any of
our merchants that make up
the family and fabric of our
community.
So again we say move on.
You want to form a BID in another
community, good luck.
Your community is your
business... our community is
our business.
Allerton was left for dead
many years ago. No money
was coming in and families
were being forced out. Now
that we are here, Allerton
has a voice and our residents
are being protected as well
as our small businesses. City
agencies created this problem
in Allerton. We don’t expect
city agencies to fi x it.
That is why we do not want
city representatives on our
board infl uencing our community.
Elections have consequences.
So random councilmembers
and mayors and
comptrollers will come and
go. We know how politics and
leverage work. This is not a
scenario we are comfortable
with.
We believed it was possible
to move forward with
a strong community minded
board that was united. To defend
against outside corruption.
But as more corruption
seeps into this process, we
had a candid discussion and
ask ourselves “why”?
Why would we allow one
potentially poisonous and
cancerous individual sit on
our board deciding how we
operate when we are totally
independent, free of corruption
and outside infl uence?
We don’t know who our next
elected offi cials will be. They
could be better than the current
ones we have. They could
be far worse. We don’t have a
crystal ball to determine this.
But what we do know is if it’s
not broke don’t fi x it.
Allerton was and still is
on a path to rebuilding slowly
without leaving anyone behind.
Our streets are cleaner.
Our merchants and residents
feel empowered and are more
engaged than before.
But then city representatives
and outside organizations
come in and disrupt
our progress. They slander
and mock us in media publications
and intimidate our
merchants into believing
something is inevitable with
or without their voice.
Why print a full page ad
to promote a BID in Allerton?
It’s simply to bluff and
intimidate our community.
We are not falling for it and
every elected offi cial you attach
to this disaster of a proposal
will cost them in votes
because we don’t like bullies.
It is a battle they can not
win. They will not win. Don’t
attach yourself to it.
If your name was publicly
attached to supporting a BID
in Allerton we recommend
you write a public letter to
let your constituents know
where you stand.
Your community is your
business.
