Temple Hatikva schedules L’chaim Shabbat Service
In the face of rising fears
and anti-Semitic incidents
throughout the city and
around the world, Temple Hatikva
will begin 2020 with a
‘Hatikva Shabbat Service of
Hope’ on Friday, January 17,
at Bronx House, 990 Pelham
Parkway South, starting at
7:30 p.m. Both the name of
the temple and this month’s
service, as well as the title of
Israel’s national anthem, derive
from the Hebrew word,
‘hatikva,’ meaning ‘hope’
“These past few weeks
have created a pall of hate and
distrust over our city and the
greater Jewish community,”
said the synagogue’s Cantor
Kyle Cherry. “These cowardly
and disgraceful acts of
violence and menace can only
breed misery for everyone,
not only Jews. It is therefore
incumbent upon us, and all
good people of the world, to
stand together as we just have
in Brooklyn, and continue to
march forward towards peace
and unity. This coming Hatikva
Shabbat, a Shabbat of
Hope, will be another demonstration
that we, as a community
and congregation, will
still continue our traditions
of peace and education never
to be disrupted, deterred, or
destroyed by such displays of
evil. As Hashem delivered us
from the bondage of slavery
in Egypt may he deliver us all
from the bondage of hate.”
Temple Hatikva welcomes
all community residents yearround,
BRONX TIMES REPORTER,56 JANUARY 10-16, 2020 BTR
especially those of the
Jewish faith, to attend our
monthly Friday evening traditional,
yet modern services
in English and Hebrew, and
our Sunday morning adult education
programs, offering a
meaningful experience to all,
even those with no synagogue
background. The next Shabbat
service is scheduled for
Friday, February 14. Monthly
Adult Education is on winter
hiatus until March.
All Friday evening services
begin at 7:30 p.m. Every
service is followed by an Oneg
Shabbat, an opportunity to
unwind from the fast pace
of your work week and commence
the Shabbat with some
challah, wine and other light
refreshments, while relaxing
with your area neighbors.
For the cold months Temple
Hatikva’s Adult Education
class will be in recess, reconvening
on March 8th. Cantor
Kyle’s theme for this year
is the examination and contrasting
of the distinct cultures
and customs Jews, and
how they have developed in
different parts of the world.
The synagogue’s Adult Education
sessions all begin with
a delicious bagel breakfast
at 10 a.m. Adult Education
breakfasts are sponsored by
Shalom Funeral Home in the
Bronx.

the synagogue can be reached

Twenty Twenty. This concept
has stuck with me over
the past few weeks. Not since
1919 have the fi rst two numbers
been the same as the last
two number. A coming together,
if you would allow me
to be poetic. A balance. 20-20.
Has a nice inviting ring to
it. And with that idea, Allerton
International Merchants Association
is focused on bringing
balance and more people
into the fold.
Without naive optimism,
we will mend fences and start
fresh with organizations that
looked to undermine our
group.
Not because we need to do
this, but because it’s the right
thing to do. We have to share
this space we call Allerton.
We don’t have to agree on everything
but we have to come
together and make some important
decisions and stop
some damaging developments
occurring in our city.
Taxes are going up. Laws
are getting remodeled. They
are looking at the Bronx and
Allerton to carry more than
it’s fair share of the load. Instead
of complaining why
this neighborhood gets this
and that neighborhood gets
that, it’s time to rally around
you community organization.
With a louder voice, that is
how you protect your community.
That is how you can obtain
a great variety of stores,
invest in the neighborhood,
and not get priced out of your
home. A strong tight knit community.
We will be taking our fundraising
work to the next level.
This will in turn likely lead
to switching gears and taking
AIM from an all-volunteer organization
to a paid staff organization.
The hours our volunteers
put in last year constituted
this work as a full time position.
Lots of phone calls
and lots of quality of life concerns.
We love doing it but we
need more time and more resources
so our voices won’t be
drowned out.
If everyone contributed
$5 a month we can push back
anything that would be detrimental
to this community.
Our 2020 calendar will be
posted on our Facebook page
so join the page at Allerton
International Merchants Association
Inc. Please accept
our apology if you tried reaching
out to us this year and it
took us a while to reply. Like
I said, we are a volunteer organization
but we are looking to
change that.
Email us at AllertonMerchants@
gmail.com for any
and all questions, comments,
and/or concerns. We received
a record number of calls in
2019 and we are humbled that
you trust and respect our ability
to maintain the community.
We expect the numbers to
be even higher in 2020 that is
why we are looking to upgrade
our infrastructure as well.
We are also creating a database.
We want local residents
to stay in the community.
So if you are looking for
a new apartment for any reason
... you need a larger space
... you need a smaller space ...
you want a private house instead
of an apartment. What
ever the reason. Call us. We
are creating a database and
will assist anyway we legally
can. We are also creating a
database for employment. We
want to make sure all of our
residents are employed and
have the opportunity for employment.
So contact us and
again we will do what we
can.
We have to look out for
each other. That’s what makes
a strong community. And that
is why I say...Your community
is your business.

I’m not going into the history
of the post since 1927
right now. Our fourth location
was sold to a realty holding
company over 10 years
ago so, sufi ce it to say and
FYI, the American Legion
and Theodore Korony Post
#253 did not sell their post
home at 241 Longstreet Avenue
to the bike club. Over
and out.
The next regular meeting
will be as usual, 10:30 a.m.,
3rd Sunday with coffee before,
lunch after.
We will do some fi nal planning
for Mid-Winter Conference,
Albany too. That’s at
ATNY, American Turners,
parking down the corner on
Philip Avenue.
Reports are in for the charity
and volunteer works completed,
jobs well done Korony
family. Won’t you join us?
Oversight of Fisher
Houses at Bronx VA continues,
big thanks to the Fisher
family, Pat and our County
Commander. Our original
‘Belly Bomber Bingo’ at VA
coming soon.
From VAVS: the VA system
has dental coverage,
three plans to choose from
(VADIP Network) if you are
eligible.
Until next time: We pray
for our President and our
troops as we watch events unfold
in the Middle East. Now
is the time to remember at
least two pillars of our organization,
Americanism and a
strong National Defense.
The next meeting of the
