TN BID receives approval from City for lights
BY JASON COHEN
Accidents or near incidents
are common on the commercial
corridor in Throggs
Neck, as the area is quite dark
and dangerous to drive on at
night.
But thanks to the efforts
of the Throggs Neck Business
Improvement District (BID),
Community Board 10 and
Councilman Mark Gjonaj, the
Department of Transportation
announced that it will be installing
new street lights from
Bruckner Blvd. to Marina Del
Rey next month.
Executive Director of the
BID Bobby Jaen told the Bronx
Times this is long overdue.
“NYC hasn’t been maintaining
Throggs Neck,” he
explained. “The city always
turned its back on taking care
of the neighborhood.”
After there were a few too
many close calls and or injuries
on East Tremont, Jaen,
the community board and
Gjonaj asked the city to do an
inspection of the commercial
corridor.
The survey, which was
done in 2019, showed the lights
were not only inadequate, but
unsafe.
According to Jaen, the
lights were scheduled for installation
in 2019, but the project
was delayed and then the
pandemic descended.
“Nobody was going to do a
job like that during COVID,”
he said.
Jaen stressed that this has
been his number one priority
since becoming executive
director. He pointed out that
there are spots on East Tremont
where drivers cannot see
pedestrians at night.
Particularly dangerous intersections
are located near
Mama Sushi and Wicked
Wolf.
With 2020 full of devastation
and darkness, this is a
nice way to kick off the year,
he stated.
“It’s something I’m very
happy I was part of,” he said. “I
can’t tell you how many times
I’ve been driving and someone
would just pop up in front
and you can’t see them. This is
something myself, Matt Cruz
and Mark Gjonaj have fought
for for over two years.”
Cruz and Gjonaj shares his
excitement.
“Community Board 10 was
happy to request street lights

corridors,” Cruz said.
“This will improve visibility
and safety. Thank you to the
Throggs Neck BID for standing
alongside us every step of the
way.”
“Local businesses and commercial
corridors are feeling
the devastating impact of the
pandemic and we must do everything
we can to protect them and
the jobs they provide,” Gjonaj
said. “Along with making NYC
small business friendly, cutting
red tape and implementing shop
local initiatives, keeping shopping
districts safe, clean and
well lit is just one of the ways we
can help achieve that.”
