Bronx Zoo buzzing with arts and a wild race
BY ALEX MITCHELL
It truly was a weekend for
the ages at the Bronx Zoo off
Southern Boulevard.
It began as zoo-goers were
treated to a symphonic surprise
last Thursday as the
New York City ballet put
on two socially distant performances
in celebration of
Earth Day.
Fittingly, the ballet performed
portions of “Carnival
of the Animals” by Saint-
Saens featuring musicians
and dancers of the New York
City Ballet, in addition to encores
of “Flight of the Bumble
Bee” and “Tunis Nefta” right
on the zoo’s historic Astor
Court Lawn.
Then on Saturday, more
than 4,100 took part in the
Wildlife Conservation Society

Run for the Wild event at
the Bronx Zoo, with all welcome
to relax and enjoy the
zoo for the entire day.
After going virtual in 2020,
this year’s running Run for
the Wild event was “reimagined”
for 2021 to meet city and
state social distancing and capacity
protocols.
This annual event is dedicated
to spread awareness of
species that are in need of conservation
support and to shed
light on the threats they face.
Each year, the WCS Run
for the Wild is dedicated to an
animal in need of conservation
support to raise awareness
of threats they face.
This year’s was dedicated
to lemurs to help WCS raise
important funds to further
its mission of saving wildlife
in New York and around the
world.
Runners, walkers, and
wildlife supporters were invited
to participate and along
with making a donation to
support a participating runner
or team.
Each participant was encouraged
to seek donations
and there are prizes for achieving
the fundraising goals.
