The Bronx Academy of Arts &
Dance forges forward with the 20th annual
BAAD!Ass Women Festival, celebrating
the empowerment of women
through art, culture and performance.
The festival kickedoff on Saturday,
March 7 with the choreographer Sidra
Bell and continues through Saturday,
March 28 with six events of dance,
literature, fi lm and performance by
strong and poignant women.
The festival takes place at BAAD!,
2474 Westchester Avenue. Ticket prices
vary from free to $25. Participants can
take advantage of the Five for $5 special
(you and four ‘girlfriends’ make a
group of fi ve and pay only $5 each with
a prior reservation.) BAAD! offers discounts
to BAAD! members, BCA cardholders
and NALAC members, and
free admission to residents of 10474

Upcoming Wave Hill events and
programs include:
Saturday, March 21; Sunday, March
22: Family Art Project: Protective Powers
of Animal Armor: How do you protect
yourself? Take a cue from nature
and mimic the protective armor of
turtles, armadillos, lobsters, sturgeon
and hedgehogs. Parade in your armor
and choreograph a boundary dance,
showcasing what you’ve learned from
animals about how to protect yourself.
Free, and admission to the grounds is
free until noon. Wave Hill House, 10
a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sunday, March 22: Terrarium
Workshop: Gardens under Glass: Design
and plant a fanciful, miniature
landscape in a glass container with a
selection of diminutive plants, perfect
for home or offi ce. Director of Public
Programs Laurel Rimmer provides
plants, materials and personal assistance
in this popular annual workshop.
Go green! Bring your own glass
container and receive an extra plant
or ceramic critter for your terrarium.
Ages eight and older welcome with an
adult. $50. Registration required, online

Sunday, March 22: Winter Workspace
Drop-In Sunday: Artists in the
Winter Workspace program share
their studio practice with visitors on
this Drop-In Sunday. This Sunday,
participating artists are Maya Ciarrocchi
and Sal Muñoz. Free with admission
to the grounds. Glyndor Gallery,
1 to 3 p.m.
Sunday, March 22: Garden and
Conservatory Highlights Walk: Garden
highlights walks offer an intimate
look at our living collections. Wave Hill
Garden Guides help you explore the
grounds and make sure that you do not
miss any seasonal fl oral wonders. Free
with admission to the grounds. Meet at
Perkins Visitor Center, 2 to 3 p.m.

WHEDco’s Bronx Music Heritage
Center, 1303 Louis Niñé Boulevard,
celebrates women’s contributions
to music and dance through a
series of events in March:
On Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m.,
the BMHC will kick off the month with
‘Nuevas Voces/New Voices in Latin
Jazz,’ featuring Berta Moreno Afro-
Jazz Soul Project, with Berta Moreno
(tenor sax/compositions), Thana Alexa
(vocals), Edsel Gomez (piano), Maksim
Perepelica (bass), and Raphaël Panniër
(drums).
On Saturday, March 21 at 8 p.m.,
the venue will hold its monthly signature
series, Bronx Rising! This edition
of Bronx Rising –titled ‘Bronx Rising!
Spirit of Aña: Rhythmic Shoes from
Cuba, Ireland and the U.S.’ – will celebrate
aña, the feminine force of the
drum, featuring the percussive dance
styles of the ‘baile de chancletas’ from
Cuba and ‘clog dancing’ from Ireland/
USA, with Danys ‘La Mora’ Perezand&
Oyu Oro, and Megan Jones Downes
and City Stompers.
The month will close with the
BMHC’s multilingual spoken word
open mic series, ‘Palabreando,’ on
Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m. Hosted
by artist Bocafl oja with Lyrical Bliss,
this edition will feature guest poet,
Rabih Ahmed.
Irishfest at
The Waterfront
Irishfest at The Waterfront
NYC will be held on Saturday,
March 21, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Join in for a celebration of Irishinspired
libations and live music
featuring the McLean Avenue
Band. There is a $20 cover charge,
$5 selection of beers, $10 cocktails,
and $15 whiskey fl ights.
