The Historic Landmarks
Preservation Center Cultural
Medallion Program
It was initiated to create a sense of
pride in history and of place among
New Yorkers and visitors, to document
signifi cant individuals, and notable
occurrences related to the City’s
cultural, economic, political, and
social history. Cultural Medallions are
placed on buildings associated with
distinguished New Yorkers involved in
the arts, sciences, the law, business,
education, sports and politics. Two
such medallions are located in the
Bronx:
Fiorello Henry La Guardia – 5020
Goodridge Avenue, Bronx, NY 10471:
One of New York City’s most beloved
mayors (1934-45), the “Little Flower”
(the English translation of Fiorello) was
also among the fi rst Italian-Americans
elected to Congress (1917-19 and
1923-33). As mayor, his progressive
reforms included a revised city charter,
expanded social services, public housing
projects and parks construction. He
lived here from 1945 to 1947.
Lou Gehrig (Henry Louis Gehrig –
5204 Delafi eld Avenue, Bronx, NY
10471: The NY Yankees fi rst baseman,
the “Iron Horse,” who played 2,130
consecutive games, lived here from
1939 to 1941. During his fourteenyear
career, he earned a .340 batting
average, 493 HRs, and 1,990 RBIs.
