SHARA HUGHES
The colorful paintings of Greenpoint-based artist Shara Hughes have a hazy,
dreamlike quality. Gravitating toward outdoor, botanical scenes, her recent work
bursts open with a kaleidoscopic vision of the natural world, each canvas filled
with a dense thicket of shocking pinks, lush greens, radiant yellows, and watery
blues. Hughes, who has exhibited at venues such as the Whitney Museum in New
York and has upcoming exhibitions in both St. Louis and Shanghai, refers to these
images as “invented landscapes.” These are not traditional landscape paintings,
concerned with detail and fidelity. What they offer instead is a way to see the
world anew, in all its intense, vibrant glory. —
