The Vander Ende-Onderdonk house in Ridgewood is the oldest Dutch
colonial stone house in New York City. The Queens gem presents two
acres of beautiful gardens and historic architecture. After a serious fire
in 1975, local residents rallied to save the structure from demolition,
forming the Greater Ridgewood Historical Society. The house was
placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and is still
maintained by the GRHS. Today, the house serves as both a museum
for a permanent exhibit on the archaeology of the Onderdonk site and
a place where visitors can walk around, explore garden exhibitions, sit
