ken said in a phone interview with
BORO. “We want to bring more art
to the Long Island City and Queens
community and to create opportunities
for kids of all ages, teens and
even adults.”
The new studio, located at 43-67
11th St., opened its doors and kicked
off its summer camp on July 5. The
camp runs on a week-by-week basis
through Sept. 3, with each week centering
around a new theme, such as
animals, builders, dollhouses, science
and superheroes.
Camp runs from 9 a.m. through 3
p.m. five days a week, though early
drop-off at 8 a.m. and extended day
until 5 p.m. are available for $20 and
$40 per day respectively.
An average day for Art Strong campers,
according to Cavadas, starts out
with a welcome activity. Then the
campers learn about famous artists
through books and images of their art
to inspire their own creations.
Each week culminates in an art show
for family and friends to come see the
art made by campers.
“With Art Strong, part of our teaching
philosophy is process based, which
means we focus a lot on the process of
making art and not necessarily the final
product,” Cavadas said. “Although,
throughout that, kids do leave with
something that they’re really excited
and proud of, but we like to explore
art through different materials, through
different techniques, though different
projects and through learning about
different artists.”
Starting in the fall, the organization
will also be offering an after-school
program for children in kindergarten
through fifth grade. It’s specifically
targeted at students in P.S. 78,
though students from other schools
are also able to join.
The after-school program will provide
homework help, along with art
projects and activities spanning various
art forms such as painting, drawing,
collage and sculpture.
It will be available to kids for as few
as one day a week up to the full five
days a week from 2:30 p.m. until 5:30
p.m. and payment will be on a semesterly
basis. There will also be free local
