Save the best for last Story By Bradley Hawks Whenever I think of my mom, one of the most immediate memories to surface is the smell of Christmas cookies baking in the kitchen. She would bake hundreds and give them away as gifts. Bon-bons, thumbprints, wedding cookies, chocolate crinkles, every cookie imaginable. My mother is one of the most phenomenal bakers I know, and if she takes the time to bake you something, you know she loves you. In college, she knew the preferred cookies of each of my friends. When she visited on the weekends, Beth would get a box of oatmeal raisin and Dan would get snickerdoodles. I entered a 4-H project each year in the foods category for 10 years. When I was 5 years old, mom and I even entered a Pillsbury Bake Off—and won. So, in the month where we reflect on our mothers, I thought it would only be appropriate to visit a few of my favorite spots to get some sweet baked treats when my mom’s cooking isn’t quite as accessible from Indiana. Mille crepes in green tea and coconut Tea + Café The team behind JJ’s Asian Fusion has recently opened a beautiful new teahouse across the street, called Tea + Café. The lovingly edited teas employ inventive ingredients, like the azuki matchapresso, almost like a frothy parfait of green tea, espresso and azuki beans. While the array of teas may be the initial draw, prepare to return for the desserts. The team is now preparing their own version of the Green Tea Mille Crepes, and the result is divine. Layer upon layer of paper-thin crepe stacked with green-tea-infused custard and a sprinkling of matcha powder. Or try their version also in coconut. You won’t regret it. 3710 31st Ave., Astoria, NY 11103 917-832-7445 Coconut Mille Crepe at Tea + Cafe MAY 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 51
